Christmas Eve Divine Office question

While reading the instructions to the Divine Office, it states that Compline (night prayer) is not required to be prayed if one attends Midnight Mass and prays Matins (the office of readings.) My question is does this mean I can pray Matins just before Midnight Mass at say 11:30 in the church or if I have to wait until after Midnight Mass when the civil law states December 25th began?
