Christmas Eve Question

I wanted to extend a question out to all of you about the Christmas holiday that is coming up.

On Christmas Eve I’m going to 4:15pm Mass with my kids, wife, and her family. After Mass we’re having everyone over to our house for Christmas Eve. I’m the only Protestant out of the 10 of us that night. I was thinking of going to a 7pm Protestant service so that I can at least take communion during the Christmas holiday.

My question:

What would your feelings be if I left the family gathering (at our house) so I could go to a church where I can receive communion (especially at Christmas)?

Since my family is almost all Protestant, I am a convert, we are always being accommodating when it comes time for Church because we respect each others faith and ways of practicing such. So I fully understand your desire to spend time with your faith community. So, IMHO, I would say go for it, maybe invite anyone who would like to go to come along.

I doubt anyone would have a problem with it, especially if you are up front about it.

The only reason I could see anyone having an issue with it is if you were trying to “sneak out.”

I don’t see why there would be a problem with it. Say where you’re going and then go.

Thanks all, that’s probably what I’ll end up doing.

I do need to preface that I did marry into a family that isn’t *the most *religious. My wife is the only one in the family that understands why some non-Catholics don’t feel welcome at the Catholic church and may want to go someplace else on Christmas Eve, even after going to church with them.

Not a problem, go and much respect for loving the Lord so much. In fact if they did fuss–you would be letting the Lord know you love HIM more that the world… 🙂
 
I’ve done the same in reverse - as the only catholic, I let them know why I was leaving for a bit. I respecr their faith, they respect mine…no problems!
 
Does your denomination have a Midnight -]Mass/-] Service of Holy Communion? I know this is done for instance in Anglican circles. The later time may cause less disruption. Or maybe an early morning service on Christmas Day?

Hi Peter,

I looked into that. There isn’t one where I live. The options are 3, 5, 7 on Christmas Eve or 9am on Christmas Day. The only one that has an outside chance of working is the 7pm.
 
Go to church. I’m a Catholic spending Christmas with my Protestant in-laws. My Protestant husband has made sure they all know I have to go to church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (they don’t do church at Christmas or when they’re on vacation). We have the church and time all picked out. We’ve done what we can to minimize impact on family plans, but if there’s fallout, husband deals with it because it’s his family.
 
I often have to do this as I’m usually the only Catholic in any get together. I do ask if anyone wants to come with me just in case someone is curious.
 
Go to church. I’d give that advice to every Christian, regardless of denomination. There is no better example for children than a father who takes faith seriously.
 
Christmas Eve is probably over, but I hope you went to the church of your choice to celebrate Christmas.
