Considering the Nativity of Christ second Paskha, the ecclesiastical ritual defines a fast equal in length to the pre-Paskhal or Great Fast precisely of 40 days, but in distinction from the Great Fast, considered a small fast Although the Christmas fast has same length as Great or Pre-Paskhal fast, it is a less strict fast. In this regard it is below the Dormition fast which is a strict fast. So in strictness, the Christmas fast is less severe than Great Fast or Dormition fast. This fast begins immediately after feast on Nov 27, today, which is Feast of St Philip Apostl. Therefore, such Fast is also called Philipov or Philip Fast. There are holy days excluded including entrance of Mother of God into Temple.
