With Christmas coming on, I would like to ask what others do for their priests? Would a card with cash be appropriate? Would having a Mass said for them be an approrpriate idea?

Any advice would be appreciated to let them know how much I appreciate all they do for us.

Thank you very much.🙂

We attend a parish run by Domincans and there are several priests that live with them. We send a basket of fruit from Harry & Davids. They love it. Others in the parish give them restaurant gift cards which they also really like.

Ooh, the fruit basket is a great idea.

I used to give our former pastor gift certificates to a cafe that he loved that was just down the street from our parish. I don’t know our new pastor well enough to do something like that.

goes off to look at the Harry & David site

I was going to suggest restaurant gift cards. They can go out for dinner with friends…

We always give restaurant gift cards 😃 Last year I also included a bunch of greeting cards that were in a card organizer box. I know he mails out a lot of cards to friends, family and parishioners. I also know he buys all the cards (the parish doesn’t). So I just bought a huge variety (all religious of course). He absolutely LOVED it!!!

Also, if you are considering a basket, see if you can find one that they can ship later in the year, like March or April. A lot of parishioners give fruit baskets and I know many of priests that end up taking them to the soup kitchen because they can’t get through it all before it goes bad. They will usually give you a card to send to the recipient, letting them know when the basket will be delivered.

I bake Banana Bread or some other tasty treat! 👍 They usually love it!

Gift cards to anywhere, including Walmart. Starbucks is a nice treat. Restaurants definitely.
Also CD’s if you know what kind of music they like. Priests get a lot of religious stuff from well-meaning gifters. Don’t give religious stuff.

Hmm. I’ve given bookstore gift certs in the past. (Again, I know our former pastor was a voracious reader.) Maybe Borders gift cards and a little homemade goodie.

Our pastor likes golf. I think we’ll give him a gift card to a sports store so he can get whatever he needs.

Gift cards or certificates are a good idea - or a roll of postage stamps 🙂

Don’t give them cakes, chocolates, pastries or other food basket like stuff…It ends up in the parish office and we folks in the office gain the weight. The only gift baskets that don’t end up in our office are baskets of cheer. They seem to keep those baskets in the rectory.

I send them a greeting card with a gift card enclosed to some place like Target or Wal-Mart so they have lots of choices to buy what they need/want.

FYI Hallmark has some lovely Christmas cards specifically for priests.

Thank you nanny PK about the Hallmark suggestion.

I am getting the idea that a gift card would be more appropriate than money. Very good suggestions. Thanks to all.🙂

Not to start anything, just an FYI in case you’re interested and don’t know; Hallmark also has a line of cards specifically for gay weddings. Some Christians are boycotting all Hallmark products.
