Loginus, the supposed pagan origins of Christmas are being discussed on another thread. I think it’s called Is the Christmas Tree Evil?
Ive been there and read the posts. Noone is contesting the fact that si was originally of pagan origin, rather as the title suggests, is it evil because it was originally pagan?

The consenus seems to be no.

Longinus,
Just curious, have you ever read a Catholic Bible? Or perhaps just peeked? 🙂

Yes, though it has been awhile 😦 I went to catholic elementary and highschool.

Im currently taking a course in Early christian writings so I have to break out my Bible once again. >< A well, at least the Bible is a much more interesting read Qur’an…though Rig Veda is a contender in terms of interest 😛

I am happy to hear you are taking a course. The Early church fathers are all you have to know to lead you to the faith. (Of course guided by The Holy Spirit).
You must know you have a Biblical name…why is that? Why choose the name Longinus??

Longinus isnt my RL name 😛 Then again my name RL is biblical lol (from the OT if you wanna take a guess 😛 )

I picked Longinus because of its duo meaning

He is the man who killed Christ ( or at least pierced him with a spear) making him the action symbollically evil as it was 'the last thrust to kill belief and salvation.

The other meaning is from the symbolizsm of the Spear of Longinus which is the one that killed jesus. (as the legend goes) because it touched the blood of the son of God, it gained magical properties. Its weilder would be undeafted in battle, healing properties and immortality. All of these are good things that it provides to its owner

I like the name 'cause in this case, evil and good is a matter of perspective 😃

Well, I like the story about Longinus because he converted as soon as the blood and water came out…Are you sure there is no undertones here?? Hmmm?? 😉

Santa is not neccesarily the problem. It is not wrong to let your children believe in Santa, but it is wrong to let them put the emphasis there. I love the picture of Santa kneeling at the manger. This year, Miles Kimball has a personalized letter from Santa with that picture on it, asking the child to help him (Santa) keep the focus on Jesus, the ultimate Christmas gift. It even comes with a Star ornament for the Child to hang on their tree, and asks that every time the child sees the ornament, that they remember that Jesus is the reason we have Christmas. They only cost about $4, and I am having one sent to several children that I know.:cool:
From the St. Nicholas Center

Everybody loves Santa Claus. He embodies holiday cheer, happiness, fun, and gifts—warm happy aspects of the Christmas season. How do Santa Claus and St. Nicholas differ?

Santa Claus belongs to childhood;
St. Nicholas models for all of life.

Santa Claus, as we know him, developed to boost Christmas sales—the commercial Christmas message;
St. Nicholas told the story of Christ and peace, goodwill toward all—the hope-filled Christmas message.

Santa Claus encourages consumption;
St. Nicholas encourages compassion.

Santa Claus appears each year to be seen and heard for a short time;
St. Nicholas is part of the communion of saints, surrounding us always with prayer and example.

Santa Claus flies through the air—from the North Pole;
St. Nicholas walked the earth—caring for those in need.

Santa Claus, for some, replaces the Babe of Bethlehem;
St. Nicholas, for all, points to the Babe of Bethlehem.

Santa Claus isn’t bad;
St. Nicholas is just better.

Here’s a link to it:

Christmas Letter

There are two different letters; the “Inspirational” letter is the one you want. 🙂

Miles Kimball also has a Christmas tree ornament, a figurine, and a Christmas card that feature Santa either kneeling down in prayer at the crib holding the Infant Jesus (ornament and figurine), or going into a church on Christmas Eve to worship (card). 🙂

When I was in the Catholic Bookstore recently I discovered this really neat little book. It brings together the story of St Nicholas and the legend of Santa Claus in a really beautiful way.
It’s called A Special Place for Santa: A Legend For Our Time.

How neat. I wish we had a Catholic Bookstore around here. Being in the “Bible Belt” south there isn’t a lot to be had for Catholics, and our local Bible Bookstore looks at you funny when you ask about a Catholic Bible or a rosary. We finally found our rosaries at a local Hispanic Store.
