Christmas presents for pastor

What is a good present to get your priest or spiritual director for Christmas?
 
I am trying to decide this also. In the past, we have either known our clergy better (having known them longer) or have gone in with a specific group (choir, etc.) on a group gift.

This year, our first Christmas at this wonderful parish, I am thinking of just getting a gift card to the local mall for each priest. That way they have the ability to buy what they want/need. If we knew of hobbies, favorite resturants, general needs, we would try to buy accordingly.

The problems with clergy, especially in a big parish, is that you have no idea whether pastor will be innudaded with golf balls because he talks about playing golf during his homilies or something similar. And certainly no priest is likely to need another rosary, statue, or prayer book! We have 4 (sometimes 5) priests living at our rectory, so I imagine food would be eaten, but even 5 men can only eat so much and I don’t want my gift to be the 3rd fruit basket or cheese plate! LOL

Home made sugar cookies decorated to the hilt! It’s a load of fun to do and everyone always loves a handmade gift that’s yummy to eat.

DW and I love to make them up and put a dozen in a small box with colored tissue paper and hand them out. The decorating is the most fun part. OK, well, after the taste testing that is.
 
We always gave our former pastor a gift certificate to a restaurant, knowing that he liked to dine out on week-ends.

I give my parochial vicar (who is also one of my dearest friends) books. He, like me, likes to read those authored by Pope Benedict XVI, as well as Fr. Hans Urs Von Balthasar. Sometimes, what he has read pops up in a homily. He also likes Scott Hahn. I may surprise him with Chesterson this time around, or something very Texana and very historicail.

He is also very hard to buy for simply because he is particular about clothing.

For my pastor, I guess it’ll be a gift certificate. He and my PV are radically different in tastes. I’ve got my PV down pat; it’s the pastor who is a tough nut to crack as far as presents are concerned.
 
Your pastor is a man like any other, so whatever you’d get him if he were just a friend. One pastor loved great wine, as do I, so I would often get him a fine vintage that I had discovered. One pastor was a recovering alcoholic, but loved fine cigars (as do I), so I got him a box of Romeo Y Julietas. Some pastors are avid readers, so perhaps books would be great. Some are musicians, so perhaps symphony or opera tickets. No need for it to be something different because he is your pastor.

parishioners will be bringing gifts for our pastor of food and baked goods for the next 2 weeks, which he will not eat, which will go to St Vincent or to the staff.

we have given up on the gift idea, there is really nothing he needs or wants, and what he does need, he has specific preferences and would rather buy his own. We give gift certificates, such as gas (he does a lot of driving on his multiple responsibilities, only some of which is covered by his mileage allowance)
 
I am in my first year with a Spiritual Director, a priest, and he is very learned about how Mary can help us all, so I got him Imitation of Mary by Thomas a Kempis. I think he really liked it and had not read it, although he had read Imitation of Christ…
 
Members of the parish took up a collection (just $10 family, from the first 40 families who signed up to participate) and purchased a year-long golf pass at one of the beautiful Robert Trent Jones golf courses here for the pastor. He LOVED it!

I gave a suede-covered, gold-rimmed writing journal to a departing parochial vicar who writes articles and just published a book. I’m giving dried fruits to the monsignor and the other clergy. I hope they all like the gifts.

Gift certificates are the best. Do you know what he likes to do on his free time. Does he like to golf? Give him a gift certificate to a local pro shop or a pass for a day of golf.
 
Our pastor has really appreciated gift certificates for gas, groceries, or something like Les Schwab where he can get oil changes, maintenance, tires, etc.
