Christmas Shopping

We as a family decided to give up on it (shopping) and we choose one name and make a gift. We had so much fun doing it, that my kids have voted to do it each year since. We are on year 3. Lots of fun, and so nice not to go to a mall ever.

For others, we make carmel corn and cookies. We really don’t need to shop if we choose not to.

I know some people who do all their shopping on line. Dosen’t this take away the fun in buying presents?. If you shop by catalog, you have to make sure you have the right size if the items are cloths. And what about returns?
Some find the malls to crowded, and would rather shop from home.

A little of all three …And, guess what? I have it all done!:bounce:

Since I work in a mall, it’s just convenient. I’m afraid to shop online - don’t want my credit card numbers floating around cyberspace.

‘On the streets of Rome’ was not a choice. That’s where I’m shopping 🙂 We’ll be there a week and I plan to get gifts there. —KCT

KCT–Be sure to check out the outdoor Christmas Market at Piazza Navona. It is great fun. La Befana (an old witch) brings presents to Italian children on January 6th the feast of the Epiphany. So there will be lots of La Befana decorations at the Piazza Navona market. Please be careful with your wallets, passports, etc. I may have warned you already. But you can’t be too careful. Take money belts to wear under your clothes. Watch especially when you are in the subway, around gypsies, at the Piazza Navona market, at the Spanish Steps–anywhere there are crowds. Have a wonderful trip.

Ooops, meant to send this as a Private Message. But what the heck. Here it is!

Mostly I shop online and at the mall. I love shopping in person, but when some items aren’t availible at local stores, online shopping is the only option

Fitz, I think that is great. You save money, and the kids get the real meaning of Christmas. We buy presents, but we don’t go overvboard. We always have Christmas with my sister and her family, and Santa Claus brings their boys so many more presents. My kids were young enough not to notice, but now it is getting tricky because how do you explain why Santa would favor one set of kids over another?

I tried to buy very small gifts, like hair ribbons, or cheap, little books just for them to unwrap so they won’t be finished so much faster and notice. My kids are very happy with what they get. The irony is that we make a lot more money but we won’t spend it all on junk that ends up in garage sales and hardly played with a week later.

A little of each for us, although not so much by catalog since online shopping has become so much more available.

Amazon.com is a good one for us- a cookbook from there and a nice bottle of wine, and we’re done shopping for my sister-in-law. I was also able to get the book that my husband wants for a lot cheaper than I’ve seen it in stores.

Magazine subscriptions can be nice, and are usually not too expensive. My mom likes Cooking Light so I renew her subscription every year, and we’re thinking about getting Mental Floss for my SIL’s fiance.

We limit mall shopping to specific gifts- no browsing. I also spend a lot of time making goodies that I pack into tins from the dollar store and give to people. A big batch of shortbread and a bottle of wine will be perfect for my boss, and our parish choir director always enjoys a container of goodies that he can keep in his office. To make the packages extra special, Pier One has really pretty ornaments that can be tied on top.

Back in the summer I visited local yarn stores and department stores for supplies; all the women, girls and babies in the family will receive hand knits (scarves, prayer shawls, hats) and all the men and boys cookies and holiday breads. Right now, I’ve completed** all** the knitting and have started filling the freezer with baked goods (thankfully my grocery store has King Arthur flour at $1.66 a bag–that’s the only flour I’ll ever use).

I can honestly say I have had more enjoyment from the hours of working on gifts than I ever did looking at catalogs, or in stores, or even at craft fairs. But I’m the homebody type. I take off my (hand knit) hat to the very many bright, creative people who both enjoy and utilize any of the poll venues in trying to find gifts for their loved ones. I admire the people who can organize and plan–and on top of that, enjoy!–shopping for dozens of people.

Isn’t it wonderful that there are so many, many ways for us to show our love for family and friends at this time?

This year, since our finances are strapped, it will be NO parties, just a little of each, some catalogue ordering, some mall shopping, some fun–skiing X-mas vacation–our favorite sport!!!

I think when kids get older–one or two main presents are what thrill them–not a bunch of junky toys any longer. It’s a real relief now that our kids are teens, not to have to run out searching for toys!!!

And I’ll be the one behind the counter smiling on the outside and wishing you a Christmas in Siberia on the inside as I’m ringing you up and trying to get out of the store to be with my family. 😃
