Christmas Traditions

Well, both the date of Christmas and Santa Claus have been trashed here recently. So how about a thread in which we can celebrate our very valid, very good Xmas traditions!

ditto on the roast beef and yorkshire pudding (we are English).

stockings (homemade) plus one “big” gift per child, and some family gifts to share.

homemade ornaments, added more each year, each set based on a theme–music, birds, sports etc.

we had a set of pre-war glass ornaments that included a green pickle, and every other item had a purpose and story behind it, and a set of those ornaments was a traditional gift for newly married couples. Any body know what I am talking about? i.e. the little house was their first home, can’t remember the significance of the pickle.

we had to make the deliberate choice at establishing our own traditions in our house with our kids to avoid the duelling in-laws situation. So we spent thanksgiving with Indiana Grandparents, Christmas at home, and New Year’s with Detroit Grandparents. If one of those families was Ohio with other children, we did gather there instead.

oh and growing up the Train and Village of course. the village and N guage train layout were constructed under the tree, and the village ran all over, including the mantel, where it became Bethlehem (somewhat anachronistic to be sure).

We mostly order chinese food and have a few beers. though one year it was tequila and natchos. we are a very untraditional family in terms of holiday meals. when everyone is doing the ham or turkey thing we do a world tour.

My favorite Christmas tradition is gathering around a homemade Advent wreath and lighting all the candels (of course including the Christ Candel) and reading the story from the gospel of Luke. Since this is my first Christmas in the Catholic Church it will intresting to see how they do it. I’m still not sure what parish church I will go to on Christmas eve. I might go to the Cathedral or I might go to a church closer to home? Any suggestions?

I really don’t have a suggestion for you. I prefer closer to home for me, because that means walking distance. Also, parking at the cathedral is a real pain.

Which do you go to more often? I guess I’d say go to the one you consider “home”.
