Christmas Tree Topper?

We have a tatted angel (looks like lace work for those unfamiliar with tatting) that my great grandmother made. My mother, sister, and aunt all have one as well. I think there may be a couple more somewhere. My husband wanted a star when we were first married, but the “my great grandmother made it” argument won out. 🙂

DH’s grandmother gave us this a few years ago, GrFather had loved this topper, and we are thrilled to have it!!
 
We’re using an angel because that’s what topped the wife’s tree when she was growing up.
I’m still looking for the correct star to top the tree. Haven’t been able to find a simple six-pointed star in white and blue (Magen David) to commemorate the Messiah/ King of Israel. Designers seem to avoid the obviously correct design for pentagrams and octograms.

I voted Angel. I have a funny storry. My youngest bro when he was about 4, went over to visit one of my other sisters. He walked in and saw her Christmas tree and noticed she had a star rather than an angel and said to my mom ‘how come sister isn’t Catholic? She has a star on her tree, not an angel’ ! We had a great laugh over that. Later he decided you couldn’t shop at Sears if you were Catholic either…kids! 😛

If everyone believes it, why is it a lie?
 
We have an angel, though last year I wanted to change it for a star and DH decided that he liked my angel too much and wanted it to stay so it did. She is very pretty, in a brocade gown with wings made of real feathers, and a porcelain head and hands.

Must put the tree up on Christmas Eve and not let this being sick business stop me!!! UGH!!!

The Reason For The Angel On The Tree

When four of Santa’s elves got sick, and the
trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast
as the regular ones, Santa was beginning to
feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her Mom was
coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found
that three of them were about to give birth and
two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven
knows where. More stress.

Then when he began to load the sleigh one of
the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the
ground and scattered the toys.

So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a
cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he
went to the cupboard, he discovered that the
elves had hidden the liquor, and there was no-
thing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally
dropped the cider pot, and it broke into hundreds
of little pieces all over the kitchen floor.

He went to get the broom and found that mice
had eaten the straw end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa
trudged to the door. He opened the door, and
there was a little angel with a great big Christmas
tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, “Merry
Christmas, Santa. Isn’t it a lovely day? I have a
beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me
to stick it?”

And so began the tradition of the little angel on
top of the Christmas tree.

I thought this was funny and I thought everyone could use a laugh!
 
Growing up, we had an angel who we named Gertrude. . . I can’t tell you how many different dresses I made for her over the years – poor thing would get so dusty. but we loved her.

When DH and I became parents, my mom and dad found (in a Protestant :eek: bookstore, no less!!!) a Madonna with a lit up blue gown holding the Baby Jesus. She/They have been topping our tree and blessing our home at Christmas for the last 16 years.
 
Growing up I always had an angel.

My husband always had a star.

So we comprimised. We found a plastic star that lights up with an angel inside.

I said angel because the star is too heavy for our current tree. I’m thinking about going back to the star. Of course we’ll have to get a new one that isn’t so heavy.
 
I collect snowman ornaments for my tree, so of course, I found a snowman topper for my tree. My roomate collects Santas, so her tree has a santa tree topper. I was lucky enough to be able to put an advent wreath out. Her comment was…Does this have Catholic significance?! Duh!

Your lucky;) . I saw one in Big Lots when I was like 7 but couldnt get it. 😦

We have a little makeshift angel that I put together like last year. I think i’m gonna buy a new one tomorrow if I find one I like. Or maybe a star.

We had a star when i was a baby and then switched to an angel that eventually fell apart. Got a new angel that got lost and last year I made a simple one with a dollar store kit, safety pins, and felt.

Would it be possible for you to look at it and see if you can identify the manufacturer?
 
For the last nineteen years, we’ve had an angel on our tree. This past July, my husband’s father passed away. Five years ago, when his brother’s wife died, we started getting ornaments that said “Hope” on them (her name was Hope) and so my husband asked me to see if I could find ornaments that said “Dad” on them. Well, all I could find were cutesy, cheesy ornaments that just didn’t fit our image of Dad. My husband had put off putting the angel on the tree because he was hoping we could find a Dad ornament to go near the top this year. Then we got the idea to buy a wooden star plaque (from the crafts’ dept. at Wal*Mart) that was about 6" across and, using our son’s wood-burning tool, inscribe the word “Dad” on it. My husband stained it and it has a simple, rustic look to it (kind of like Dad!) Well, he was so excited he took it over to show his mom and SHE and his sister had been having a hard time deciding what to put on top of THEIR tree this year. When they saw the star we had made, they fell in love with it. They tried it out on their tree and it looked perfect.

Needless to say, we’re making another one for OUR tree!

My FIL had such a beautiful holy death–my BIL who is a priest celebrated Mass at Dad’s bedside an hour before Dad died and Dad’s last lucid moment was during the consecration when he tried to sit up and held his arms out toward Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. I can’t go into all the details now (they are too numerous to name) but my husband has said that all these years we had an angel on our tree, but now he wants to put a saint on our tree!

Okay, I’m crying now, gotta go!

Wish I could. We’ve moved so many times, I don’t even have the original box. I looked online and saw her twin on E-bay, but there was no manufacturer listed. When the tree comes down in Epiphany, I may be able to examine her more closely. . .

Nothing right now. We have a star, but the new tree we bought is so tall that the star scrapes the ceiling. There’s no way an angel would fit. :o

We used to put a bow on our old, smaller tree. Maybe we’ll go back to that.
 
Growing up it was always a star.
Only in Canada, did I see angels being used.
We have 2 trees. One has a star on top with an angel right below and the other an angel on top with a star right under.
