Christmas Vigil vs Midnight Mass

I used to live in a country parish, and our Midnight Mass was packed every year. These days, though, only a few parishes with relatively young pastors have Midnight Mass. They are spread so much more thinly than in the past, so it is too hard on the older ones.
Our 56 year old pastor has only our parish to contend with and only 3 Masses: 2 Christmas Eve and one Christmas Day. He still opted to celebrate the Mass at 10 p.m. rather than Midnight.

Actually I never actually checked the 2010 version of Breaking Bread. But I just checked the 2007 edition and the Vigil Mass was not included. Our parish has always used the abbreviated version which doesn’t have the full readings but rather synopsizes of the readings. I don’t know if that makes a difference.

So, basically, what is the difference between the propers for the four different Christmas masses?
And… dumb question… what does “propers” mean???

The prospers would be the prayers specific to a particular Mass, i.e. the Opening Collect, the Prayer After Communion, in some cases the Preface.

thx, I’m looking forward to going to both a vigil and a night mass, and see if the vigil is really a vigil…
