I recently discovered that a handbook on Indulgences exists–I was pretty shocked by its existence, and I would like to know what other breviaries and hand books were in common use (both by clergy and lay) in the pre-Vatican II Church. Suggest a favorite Bible, as well?

So, I was wondering if people would give an ‘essential’ list of books for the Traditional Catholic (not like Malachi Martin or Archbishop Lefebvre’s encyclicals)–and maybe a list of auxiliary texts that could round out the ‘essential’ texts or are interesting for some reason.

Just need to have a list of books ready to give my pious aunties, when they ask what to get me… 😃

Here’s what I came up with off of the top of my head:

Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner Revision

Denzinger’s The Sources of Catholic Dogma
Dr. Ott’s Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma
Fr. Prummer’s Handbook of Moral Theology, Adapted for American Usage

The 1962 Daily Missal
Blessed be God: A Complete Catholic Prayer Book

Right Rev. Tanquerey’s The Spiritual Life
Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange’s Three Ages of the Interior Life

God bless!
