in our family there is only one, the Year Pat Got the New Red Bike. bicycles were something you picked up off the garbage pile on the curb, or if you had a couple of bucks, at the police auction, fixed up and rode until they fell apart. In our family of 8 the tradition was stockings, one “big” gift for each child (the kind wrapped in pretty paper, usually the funnies’ pages from the Sunday paper), and one family gift, like a board game. this year dad must have gotten a bonus because Pat, the youngest, about 8 found a shiny new red discount store bicycle (already assembled, oldest brother and expert mechanic was in on the surprise). It was a good bike, my grandkids rode it whenever they visited grandma, long after Pat graduated to adult size 10 speeds. we’re Catholic (at least we all were back then) is it okay to post here?
