does anyone else feel an urgent need to pray for these poor souls? they were so misguided and practically worshipped by the media for their positions on embryonic stem cells. what a tragedy for their son to have lost both of them in such a short time, and my heart goes out to him.
i do hope they find themselves at rest now. something about them is nagging me, and i am no fan of celebrity

Nope not me. At least not as urgent as any other soul in purgatory who needs prayers. God judges the human heart, not ones positions on stem cell research. The law serves US, we dont serve the law. The greatest and only rule…love one another. In that, I seen a dedicated wife who was brave and a man who went from an agnostic to believing in a supreme power of some sort. I have no doubts they are with God.

Lets pray for all souls. Celebrity or not.

yes, all souls need prayers, I agree. and the truth is, i only heard them speak on occasion (maybe once) but they struck me as lost souls. souls that don’t know Our Lord and have no desire to know Him. Now, I could be DEAD WRONG, I know that, too.
as troy said, she did do an excellent job of supporting him during ‘x’ number of years of paralysis, i give her credit for that, but i was always so frustrated to hear their determination to use unborn babies to cure injuries and diseases.

Actually, we are kinda wrong. For one… We were not there at their death bed. We don’t know if they could have had an encounter with God and repented.

In my Catechism class, I had sounded off about how here in Puerto Rico they pray for X amount of days for people who died. Some of these people were murderers, drug pushers and I felt they deserved no prayers. But I was told different by a Priest who happened to hear me. For we know not what their last moments on earth were and what they encountered.

yes, like many they may have been misinformed about the therapeutic possibilities of embryonic stem cells, but one can certainly understand the desperate hope that fueled that thinking. They also showed respect for the intrinsic value of the life of a severely disabled person, something that is challenged on many fronts today. they also showed a beautiful example of faithful married love in sickness and in health.

absolutely a good example of married love, and i hadn’t thought about the end-of-life, or disabled angle. thanks!
in no way am i suggesting they are in hell. i did say “pray for them”, which means purgatory and ultimately, Heaven. and purgatory is where most of us will end for a time anyway. maybe i should’ve been praying for them while they were alive. i do hope they turned to God at the end.

that is a good point, we must remember to pray for people in need while they are still alive, especially for anyone in need of conversion before death, as well as for the souls in purgatory. We can not necessarily judge, however, who those individuals are since none of knows the state of another’s soul. It is possible to be mistaken on one moral issue and still to be a person of prayer, a person seeking to do God’s will. There is no need to speculate about whether these or any other persons had “turned away from God.” We simply offer the prayers and let God direct them as he wills, we do not pray in such a way as to imply a judgement or to issue orders to God.
