I doubt I’ll find a book specific to my needs, but wondering if Christopher West’s “Good News About Sex and Marriage” offers any advice for a Catholic whose spouse has been sterilized. I’m needing some comfort and wisdom to deal with/heal from this experience.

I can check it out tomorrow when I go into work.

And look at other books that might be helpful.

But hopefully someone can give you an answer before then. If not. 🤷

I’ve read the book and I don’t recall it containing much advice on that situation. (Other than explaining why it is immoral to get oneself sterilized in order to not have children.)

Good News about Sex and Marriage is in a question/answer format. There is one question pertaining to a husband’s insisting on using contraception. And what to do about it. There is another about a woman having had her tubes tied and regretting it.

I don’t think there is enough in the book for it to be of much use to you.

I also looked at two other books. Theology of the Body for Beginners by West and Holy Sex by Popcak.

I didn’t find much, if anything, in those books either. Although I have to say, *Holy Sex *was a good read.

Holy Sex does address someone wanting a vasectomy, but doesn’t address what to do after the fact. 🤷

I didn’t have any other books at the store that might address your topic. I am sorry I wasn’t more successful.

I would read “Life Giving Love” by Kimberly Hahn - I have it and believe it is a very good book - I highly recommend it

She looks at this very topic and I believe you will find some helpful reflection in it …

Topics covered from the link above:
  • The Beauty of God’s Design regarding procreation and union
  • The value of the child in our society and in Scripture
  • The Bible and contraception
  • What Natural Law reveals about contraception
  • The abortion-contraception connection
  • Infertility and sterilization
  • How to heal after a miscarriage or stillbirth
  • Natural Family Planning and being stewards of our fertility
  • Our bodies as living sacrifices
  • Practical advice on how to Minister to Moms

Wow, maryjk, thanks for all the leg work!

YADA, it’s precisely Mrs. Hahn’s book which spurred my interest. In her chapter on sterilization, one couple didn’t get the vasectomy reversal, perhaps for financial reasons, but continued to use NFP and abstain during the fertile phase so as not to ‘enjoy the benefits’ of this time. This may be the approach I take. I must confess, I was looking forward to ditching the charts (partially out of hurt feelings), but I know I am being called to do what I know to be right and continue to chart my cycle and judiciously discern and abstain during the fertile phase.

My GF who’s unable to conceive and has ditched her chart says she and her husband basically just pick one week a month to abstain. Praying I can persevere!
