My husband posed a question to me today that I wasn’t sure how to answer. (I converted a couple years ago and he is now studying the Catholic faith. He is very “science” minded)

Here is his question: If Jesus was fully man and fully God, what was his DNA as a human?
(He was reading the beginning of Matthew where there is a long lineage line and this popped into his head)

Any answers?

Thank you,
mlz

I suppose it would be whatever DNA the Holy Spirit chose. But I half suspect that DNA might be mostly if not all that of the Blessed Mother, with the additional chromosome.

Remember that our LORD/BVM are the new Adam/Eve.

Eve had Adam’s DNA, converted to female.

So I’ve no doubt that Mary’s DNA, converted to male, became our LORD’s.

This might be the case. Maybe Jesus was Mary’s biological clone, with an X swapped for a Y chromosome.

This comes up a lot - just recently in a Bible class-

asexual reproduction (I do not mean to in anyway offend anyone here) is common in nature -parthogenesis

*the answer below makes a great deal of sense-

"Remember that our LORD/BVM are the new Adam/Eve.

of course although there was a Y chromosome Adam and a mitochondrial Eve-they may have existed at the same time but not in the same region and plenty of other humans around-this is an arguement that will never end

It may sound strange, but I wonder what would happen should scientists try to clone DNA from Christ? Would they just get the ‘shell’ of the body he had or…?

DNA doesn’t preserve that well. They wouldn’t be able to get a live body.

And how would they know the DNA was His?

Menbe you’ve watched too many Crichton movies :)🙂

There is in fact a live body.

Perhaps the DNA of Joseph was replicated (mirrored), to complete Jesus DNA; without actually coming from Joseph.

You would get a large rock coming from deep space in our direction!

I very much doubt God would allow men to gain DNA samples of His flesh where they intend to clone Him. Even if they did somehow gain such DNA from some Eucharistic miracle or whatever, then I doubt He would allow such an artificial conception to take place at all.

That’s worse than the Tower of Babel when you really consider it. People who attempt to engineer their own Jesus probably deserve an asteroid impact.

I take issue with these sorts of “boxed in” questions. These are a dime a dozen from the scientific community (of which I am becoming a member). The general gist is to pose a question that is on the surface a very black and white answer type question but is in reality forcing the person they are asking it to to completely leave out any chance/occurence of the supernatural so as not to sound silly or of low intellectual sophistication.

Couldn’t Jesus have had an entirely unique genome made by the hand of God which needed neither nucleic acid contribution from Mary nor Joseph? I don’t know if he did, but he certainly could have. He changed the fundamental chemistry of water, after all. So, what does it matter?

Science should have nothing to say about the supernatural, by definition. They are shaming us into denying the possibility of supernatural occurences which forces us to try and explain everything naturally. It’s a fools errand, in my opinion.

Howdy Students of Science:

The most scientifically studied object in the world,The Shroud of Turin, to my knowledge may contain the data you seek. One can find the DNA data in a well referenced book entitled ‘THE DNA OF GOD?’, by Dr.Leoncio A. Garza -Valdes.The author presents data that the blood type on the shroud of Turin is of human origin and type AB POSITIVE.This type is considered the ’ universal recipient’ for A,B,and O types and combinations.

The red blood cells on the shroud only contains Maternal (mitochondrial)DNA so all ( nuclear)DNA is still undiscovered and may not be recoverable from the Shroud of Turin.I for one have great comfort that the Catholic Church is the custodian for the protection of the burial cloth.

The book was published in 1999. An easy read for the public even if your science background is not well grounded.

‘What does it matter’?When I encountered this inquiry in my early years of childhood education it perplexed my spirit. The following statements by Albert Einstein may help you find something to answer this as I have.

Einstein said ’ I know quite certainly that I myself have no special talent;
curiosity, obsession and dogged endurance combined with self-criticism
have brought me to my ideas’.

A postscript from A.Einstein presents another statement to ponder:
Code:
' It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education'.

Interesting forum.
If we were really interested in determining the DNA of Jesus, wouldn’t we be able to use a piece of the Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano, Italy? This piece of Flesh has been analyzed and the results are that it was real human flesh, and in particular heart tissue that is actually the entirety of the organ of the heart, the blood type is AB. So since this has already been through the scientific analyses wouldn’t it be very simple to obtain the DNA code for this tissue sample. There are two other Eucharistic miracles that I am aware of that would be able to be run for DNA coding. But the real question is; to what end? Why is Jesus’ DNA code important? How would this deepen our faith? Would we expect that he would have a “supernatural” DNA code? Would his code be “Jewish”? If so what would that prove? Or are we really saying, “unless I place my finger in the holes in his hands and feet and unless I place my hand in his side, I will not believe.”?

Truly sublime.
