Mad Amos is quoting our beliefs regarding Christ coming back…it will be Judgment Day…He is not coming to spend 1,000 years with us…

And in ancient times, 1,000 years was like eternity to them…

On the day I die, it will be the end of my life…and the consequences of what I did or didn’t do…will be where I go…so you could say it is my own judgment day…and I don’t know the day it will come either…

Judgment…we have the sacrament of reconciliation/confession/penance…always accessible to us as well as all ordinary sin forgiven at Mass…so yes, it is good to point out context…and I would say our understanding as such is sacramental as well.

Furthermore, because we believe in purgatory and have had the book of Maccabees for 2,000 years…we also believe it good to pray for the dead…sacraments and prayer of the Church for those who have passed on.

About which Bible I use…

several…mainly American Standard that we use at Mass, followed up by Jerusalem Bible that shows historical/cultural contexts…and a few times, Dhouy-Rheims…drawn from Latin Vulgate…

About the Bible Luther took out…here are some…Maccabees and Sirach, Ecclesiastics, St. James in the NT…He changed one word of Scripture…a no no. correct me here…but I thought he deleted 7.
The fact is that Luther translated and included all 73 books of the western Bible of his time. I have a copy of it, and all of them are still there. Luther, like many scholars before him, and within his rights within the Church, questioned the canonicity of the D-C books, and the authorship of James. But he deleted none of them.

As for changing a word. He changed all of them - into German. All of the words in the D-R bible were changed - into English. The use of “allein” in Romans 3:28 was necessary for a German translation. It isn’t needed in English, so no English Bible has “alone” in Romans 3:28.

Jon,

We have a Lutheran lady in our class studying the Catholic Church, and our pastor also made reference to the KJV as not having all the same set of books…

I am Bible scholar as far as exactly what is in his Bible…but if this is a Protestant bible from Luther, I would consider it comprised…the Bible is the work of the Church, over many years that involved many people…and he alone, faith alone…changed the Bible to fit his ideas of Sola Scriptura…

I think Sola Scriptura has helped people to relate personally to Scripture…but we need to understand it as a church.

The readings you gave were the ones I did as 2nd lector on the feastday of Christ the King, the last Sunday of the liturgical year…we also have to be ready any day for the Lord alone knows that day…

Christ will rule over a new heaven and a new earth.

Ask him about the original 1611 KJV. The moderns ones, unfortunately, do not have the D-C’s.

Luther had nothing to do with the KJV. It is an English Bible, published well after Luther died. Other than arrangement of books, and translating it into German, Luther made no changes. In fact , there were Catholic translators who used Luthers work in their German translations.

SS would be of no assistance in understanding the Bible. And you are correct about needing the Church to understand it.

I have done a little research…I read a source more or less stating what you said…I went to another source and it said he took out 7 books…

What I find troubling about the man is the events of his life that made him think he needed to enter a monastery…it seemed on the neurotic side, and then I took a class where it came up that Luther was indeed had some excessive fixations…)

Yes, I stand corrected that the KJV came afterwards…my apologies…

Whoaa…

It was late for me…Correction: I am NOT a Bible scholar…I have a basic foundation…itself a roadmap…but not a scholar’s education in Scriptures by any means…

I find the best place to learn Scripture is at Mass…and the priest gives homily that includes the context of the times…the faith of the people, the saints…and deep meaning, then we participate in commenting…we have about 15 at daily Mass.

The first degree of theology is to learn it prayerfully.

I try to stay away from alot of the tremors of faith today…with prophets, etc…one day is as a thousand years…and if you live it prayerfully in the spirit of the Gospel…one day at a time is enough looking at this world.

But Luther…he was not a balanced person…and he was living in most corrupt times of the Church.

I exhort all Christians to return to the banquet table to be one…the Lutheran lady is seeing so much in our faith…she still has issues of going to the priest for confession … or did…I explained to her my own experience…and she seemed to understand better. She also asked how we are to look at the Bible and all they covered that night was the literal sense…I believe Luther was a literalist…can’t go into that one…

But don’t you think he had alot of audacity as well to change even one word of Scripture by adding ‘alone’…and look at the subsequent breakdown of faith, unity, families and society…we are not to change one word of Scripture…

Kathleen, I knew what you meant. No problem. 😉

I tend to agree.
But Luther…he was not a balanced person…and he was living in most corrupt times of the Church.
On what source to you base the first part. On the second, this is truly the tragedy that you and I, both praying for unity, have still to endure. That His Church is divided because of sinful human beings - on both sides.
I exhort all Christians to return to the banquet table to be one…the Lutheran lady is seeing so much in our faith…she still has issues of going to the priest for confession … or did…I explained to her my own experience…and she seemed to understand better.
I join in that exhortation. It is a shame she would be uncomfortable going to confession.
Lutherans ought to be encouraged to do so. I do.
But don’t you think he had alot of audacity as well to change even one word of Scripture by adding ‘alone’…and look at the subsequent breakdown of faith, unity, families and society…we are not to change one word of Scripture…
Have you read Luther’s explanation for “allein” being in his translation? It was not audacity, it was translation. And again, it is not in the English, in any version I am aware of, because it isn’t required in translation to English.

And I would, of course, disagree with you cause and effect scenario.

The topic is " Christ’s Second Coming ". I hope Jesus, in his second coming, will not be coming in (or needing) a new or old model car??
