I have been studying the use of the dueterocanonical works for a while now. And I was slowly putting the pieces together. I had an eureka moment last night. My eyes were opened.
My question is twofold :
Thanks!
==============================================================
In Matthew the heading in my RSV says “request for a sign”. And the answer is “no sign but that of the prophet Jonah”. Well there is a lot more hiding in plain sight right there. And it is as plain as plain could be. Christ is teaching directly from the Dueterocanonical work of Wisdom of Solomon.
I have blogged on this before but tonight I was up praying and reading. I looked back over my Christ using the Wisdom of Solomon post. My eyes must have been opened because suddenly it all connected in a way that words cannot express.
First the passage from Matthew.
Continuing linearly, not proof texting, not jumping around, just reading the Word. Read the rest of Matthew 12 verses 39-42
Christ is teaching from Jonah, the writings of Jonah, where he speaks of the type of his burial and resurrection. In precisely the same manner he names the Wisdom of Solomon, the very work that he is teaching from here. But what must be realized clearly is that the sign of the Prophet Jonah and the Wisdom of Solomon are part and parcel the same sign. Indeed even the asking for a sign is part and parcel of the crucifixion.
To see this lets just keep right on reading, again linearly not jumping back and forth from the Wisdom of Solomon, the very passage that Christ begins teaching from in Matthew 12:34. I will for brevity pass over six versus of Wisdom and continue from Wisdom 1:16 and continue straight through until the end of the second chapter.
And just so we can be fully convinced lets pass on in the gospel of Matthew to the crucifixion. Reading from Matthew 27 we first hear the words of the passers by and then the words of the chief priests, scribes and elders.
Christ teaching from virtually all of the first two chapters of Wisdom of Solomon and applying it to the rulers of that day. Christ applying the prophecy of the second chapter of Wisdom of Solomon to himself combined with the prophecy or sign of Jonah. Christ even calling out the source of his teaching by name, just like he called out Jonah. The broader aspects of asking for a sign and testing connecting Wisdom 1 and 2. When Matthew gave his account of the crucifixion he carefully noted how those who called out to Christ did in fact do everything he prophesied and that was prophesied so clearly and so explicitly in Wisdom of Solomon. On and on.
Is it any wonder that in the post Christian era these books would be expunged from the canon of the Jews ? Why does the Church include them in her canon ? Because they were included by Christ and by his Apostles. There are many more examples of the use of these books by the authors of the new testament. There is much to divert from the clear and obvious point.
Christ taught from Wisdom of Solomon as prophecy of himself and in other ways, the Gospel records the manner in which it was fulfilled.
Remember where it says “cursed is anyone who hangs on a tree” and how “he suffered a shameful death even death on a cross” and so on and so forth in the epistles and possibly acts ? This wasn’t a peripheral concept it was core. And it came from Wisdom of Solomon.
This isn’t a new thing, some novel teaching, that I am observing here. There is a Church which has preserved the deposit given it for 2000 years. And on this point the Church both East and West are unanimous. Only the protestants, out of sincere ignorance I hope, reject this prophecy of Christ, used by Christ, used by the Gospel writers and the apostles etc. And their reason is the Jews don’t accept it and they base this on a post Christian era council or school of Rabbis.
We have the Wisdom of Solomon, we have the Words of Christ, we have the words spoken to Christ on the cross as recorded by Matthew. We have Christ saying the Wisdom of Solomon will condemn you and it was accepted by the Queen of the South. It could not be any more clear.

My question is twofold :
- What alternate sources in the rest of the old testament exist, outside the dueterocanonicals, for these teachings of Christ ?
- What are the earliest sources in the Church that we have where these passages of Wisdom of Solomon are applied to Christ ?
Thanks!

First the passage from Matthew.
34 You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter; 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign;
but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nin’eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
Consider that what Christ says in versus 34-39 comes from Wisdom of Solomon. Like so many Biblical quotes its not a literal word for word its a summarization and restatement of exactly the same teaching. And I see no where else where this same teaching is articulated together in any spot of scripture.Matthew 12:34-42 RSV
1 Love righteousness, you rulers of the earth, think of the Lord with uprightness, and seek him with sincerity of heart; 2 because he is found by those who do not put him to the test, and manifests himself to those who do not distrust him. 3 For perverse thoughts separate men from God, and when his power is tested, it convicts the foolish; 4 because wisdom will not enter a deceitful soul, nor dwell in a body enslaved to sin. 5 For a holy and disciplined spirit will flee from deceit, and will rise and depart from foolish thoughts, and will be ashamed at the approach of unrighteousness. 6 For wisdom is a kindly spirit and will not free a blasphemer from the guilt of his words; because God is witness of his inmost feelings, and a true observer of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue. 7 Because the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, and that which holds all things together knows what is said; 8 therefore no one who utters unrighteous things will escape notice, and justice, when it punishes, will not pass him by. 9 For inquiry will be made into the counsels of an ungodly man, and a report of his words will come to the Lord, to convict him of his lawless deeds;
It is all there. In versus 34-39, speaking to the rulers, the wicked ask for a sign, God is not found by those who test him, and there is a deeper meaning to putting him to the test that I will demonstrate in a moment, the words come from the heart and convict and we will have to answer for them in that day, etc. I am not articulating it as clearly as it should be done. But who its speaking to, the overall topics and their application is parallel.Wisdom of Solomon 1:1-9 RSV

Everyone knows who has spent any time in study in any protestant, as well as Catholic or Orthodox, environments what this means. As Jonah was in the belly… Christ here prophecies of the death and resurrection of himself. Verse 41 The men of Nineveh will arise and condemn and something greater than Jonah is here. But what is verse 42 here speaking of ? What is the meaning of the queen of the south hearing the Wisdom of Solomon and something greater than Solomon being here ?but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

16 But ungodly men by their words and deeds summoned death; considering him a friend, they pined away, and they made a covenant with him, because they are fit to belong to his party.
1 For they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves, “Short and sorrowful is our life, and there is no remedy when a man comes to his end, and no one has been known to return from Hades. 2 Because we were born by mere chance, and hereafter we shall be as though we had never been; because the breath in our nostrils is smoke, and reason is a spark kindled by the beating of our hearts. 3 When it is extinguished, the body will turn to ashes, and the spirit will dissolve like empty air. 4 Our name will be forgotten in time and no one will remember our works; our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud, and be scattered like mist that is chased by the rays of the sun and overcome by its heat. 5 For our allotted time is the passing of a shadow, and there is no return from our death, because it is sealed up and no one turns back.
6 “Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that exist, and make use of the creation to the full as in youth. 7 Let us take our fill of costly wine and perfumes, and let no flower of spring pass by us. 8 Let us crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither. 9 Let none of us fail to share in our revelry, everywhere let us leave signs of enjoyment, because this is our portion, and this our lot. 10 Let us oppress the righteous poor man; let us not spare the widow nor regard the gray hairs of the aged. 11 But let our might be our law of right, for what is weak proves itself to be useless.
12 “Let us lie in wait for the righteous man, because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions; he reproaches us for sins against the law, and accuses us of sins against our training. 13 He professes to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord. 14 He became to us a reproof of our thoughts; 15 the very sight of him is a burden to us, because his manner of life is unlike that of others, and his ways are strange. 16 We are considered by him as something base, and he avoids our ways as unclean; he calls the last end of the righteous happy, and boasts that God is his father.
17 Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen at the end of his life; 18 for if the righteous man is God’s son, he will help him, and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. 19 Let us test him with insult and torture, that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his forbearance. 20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for, according to what he says, he will be protected.”
21 Thus they reasoned, but they were led astray, for their wickedness blinded them, 22 and they did not know the secret purposes of God, nor hope for the wages of holiness, nor discern the prize for blameless souls; 23 for God created man for incorruption, and made him in the image of his own eternity, 24 but through the devil’s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his party experience it.
Do you hear that ? The righteous man is against us and exposes our ways. He calls himself a child of God, he boasts that God is his Father, let us test him because if he is God’s son then God will save him. And the way we will test him will be by insult, torture and a shameful death. This is the continuation of the linear teaching from Wisdom of Solomon and the linear continuation in Matthew 12. Its directly intertwined with the sign of Jonah. In fact Jonah’s sign is actually the smaller part of the parallel. It deals only with the amount of time he is in the tomb.Wisdom of Solomon 1:16-2:24 RSV
And just so we can be fully convinced lets pass on in the gospel of Matthew to the crucifixion. Reading from Matthew 27 we first hear the words of the passers by and then the words of the chief priests, scribes and elders.
What did they say ? They said you said in three days you would rebuild your temple in 3 days. You said you were the Son of God. If thats true prove it. Come down from the cross and we will believe. We still want a sign we still want to test you. Granted the 3 days isn’t stated as Jonah rather its a differnet example of Christ prophesying of the exact same thing.39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
