Definitely publication order, for all the reasons mentioned here.
I first read The Silver Chair as a teen, and it was magical. It’s still my favorite, with Puddleglum the Marshwiggle, and his assertion that he intends to live as much like a Narnia as possible, even if there’s no Narnia to return to (as the Witch claimed.)That comment has gotten me through many a tough time in my faith.
But the magic of that tale, the atmosphere which I had never met in any other book, led me later to Lewis’ other writings, and eventually to Mere Christianity, and salvation.
