Chronological arrangement of Scripture?

Somewhere I once saw a convenient arrangement of the Scriptures in chronological order. It did not keep all the books whole, for instance, one would read some Psalms, then some Samuel, then more Psalms, &c, or some of Acts, a letter of St. Paul, more Acts, &c. However, it was not an attempt to get every verse into chronological order and so did not mix up Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Most books were read whole even though they overlapped or repeated.

If someone could share a similar arrangement with me it would be appreciated.

I bought a NKJV chronological Bible at Walmart. It is just a paperback, & being a Protestant Bible, there is no deuterocanon, but it is set up this way. I like it a lot, because I can see what is happening around the times of the section I am reading…

Moderators frequently jump in and point out that resurrecting old threads ( I can’t remember if its defined as 6 months or 12 months) is not allowed.

I did a little more research and applied a few amendments/corrections to my original list. I re-arranged the placement of chronicles,kings and judith and tobit based on further reaearch. Keep in mind that by trying to order this chronologically by book - not by verse- the order will not be perfect and there will be overlapping parts. But, if you want to read one book at a time, this is the best I can provide for now.

In a nutshell there are 14 books that provide the storyline. The Old and New Testaments do not read like novels obviously. But if you read these books in order, you’ll get the storyline:

When you read them in the order they took place so much more wisdom is revealed it is amazing. You gain a far better understanding of how they relate to one another and the reasons that things were done - because you see the context of WHEN it happened with what happened before.

I have not yet found a chronological Bible officially endorsed by the Roman Ctholic church, so I’ll just have to use one of the lists like the excellent one above and flip pages to get to the right reading for chronological order. If anyone does find a chronological printing of the Bible including all the books please let me know.

If you want to read the Gospels in Chronological Order you can get a parallel Gospel. I have one at home.

None on the list seems to have John 1:1 being read anywhere near Gen 1:1 🤷
 
There are at least two different ways to approach the chronological arrangement of the bible:
  1. *When the particular book or section was actually written. *This arrangement is found through scholars and historians and so forth who do biblical research to try to determine about what time a particular section of the bible was written down in history. *Using this kind of research it has been determined that the book of psalms and deuteronomy were probably written down before the book of genisis. *This order is usually never used when trying to make a list of readings that attempts to turn the the bible into a long chronologically coherent narrative. Occassionally this type of order can be confused with the other type of order - I guess maybe because some people persist in believing that such things as *Genesis was written first because it addresses the beginning of everything.
  2. Arranged by the apparent time period mentioned in the actual book or section. *This is the order most lists attempt. *This is an attemp to make the passages read like a sequential account of chronological *occurrences. *Thus, this arrangement places genesis chapter 1 at the beginning since the book talks about the beginning of everything. *Psalms gets placed around the time of the first temple and may be attributed to Solomon. *
So I guess a point to be made here is that when we read somewhere of how a section should be ordered *, we have to consider which arrangement type is in use.

I believe scholars have determined that the book of Tobit was written many years after the author claims he had written the book. *This may present a problem for many fundamentalist protestants who may believe that every word of the bible is true (including historically accurate). * Catholics , on the other hand, believe that the bible is inspired by God and more for telling us about God’s relationship to people and not necessarily about history.

It is still helpful for Catholics to read the bible from a chronological perspective since this may help us better understand each book in its supposed chronological context. It is also very helpful to read a good book about bible history.
 
I know this thread is a year old, but I’m so glad I came across it. When I first chose to follow the call to Catholicism (November '11) I couldn’t find many Catholic Bible reading plans and I was used to the plethora available for Protestants.

I read the Protestant Bible chronologically one year and really loved it…it was so much easier for me to keep track of what was going on, especially in the Old Testament. Looking forward to starting a chronological plan with my Catholic Bible.
