Any thoughts on how the Churches were treated under Nazi and Soviet control?

Aside from interfering with ordinations/ consecrations. Churches/ schools/ seminaries taken away by the government. I can not imagine such a think in our world today.

The Nazis tolerated the churches as long as they were buying into what they were selling which was a watered down, racist theology. Dietrich Bonhoffer challenged it in his writings. The soviets at first obliterated the Russian church but brought it back in the late 30s under state control because they knew it was useful for coalescing national unity for the war.
 
The people who suffered the longest were first controlled by the Nazi followed by the brutal Soviets. East German/ Baltic Lutherans were denied entry to parishes/ cathedrals decades after WW2. It is so great that those days are long gone. And thank our family members who served in the cause for freedom of the Church.

I can’t think of better examples for why the two kingdoms of church and state ought to remain separate. Off hand, I can’t think of any time where state intrusion into ecclesial matters has turned out for the better.
