I did not grow up religious but over the past few years I’ve come to faith. I want to be part of the church that Jesus founded and to be able to participate in all the sacraments. I want to be Catholic.
However I’ve been looking at some of the church teachings and I don’t agree with them. It is uncomfortable for me to say “I don’t agree with the church on that issue” so I read a lot of articles and blogs online hoping one will convince me or help me see the truth of what the church teaches, because it’s not comfortable to disagree. But if I don’t believe something, I can’t just say I believe it. I believe that the desire for truth is a divine prompting, and to say I believe something I don’t would be to sever that. It is hard to accept that the church is not run by angels, but by fallible human beings. It is hard to disagree, but it would be harder to PRETEND to myself and to God that I believe something I don’t.
I do let the church teaching challenge me, it is not “picking and choosing.” If I see a teaching that seems strange I try to understand it and I will likely accept it even if it’s going to be really hard to live up to. I am not being capricious. If I say I disagree with something it’s only after a long hard challenging thought process that is not at all casual. Anyway after all my thought and reading I just can’t see why contraception is a moral wrong. I am confused, so please help me–not on the contraception thing per se, but just about the feelings I’m having about disagreeing with the church.
