Church Channel on Eucharist

Interesting, I was watching the protestant “Church Channel” the other night and the preacher was exhorting the congregants to have communion more often. Of course this is without belief in the Real Presence, but nonetheless it was an appeal to practice.

To paraphrase, he said when one is feeling low, or is feeling down to hold bread and grape juice up high and self-consecrate it by saying lord this is your body, this is your blood. He added by saying, don’t worry, if you don’t have any juice then use plain water he said.

I didnt know the the average Joe Schmoe could consecrate bread and wine, secondly to use water in place of wine!

Wow I said, individual interpretation is really getting out of hand…

With that understanding of holy communion I’m surprised he didn’t advise them to use orange juice or cranberry juice or even soda pop!

Oh, and a funny story about my days in the Assemblies of God. We were going to a little mission church and needed more crackers for communion. So a couple of the ladies ran to the grocery store and came back with them. But, when the package was opened to put the crackers on the tray, they turned out to be Cheezits instead of plain ones! There was no communion at that service, I’m afraid, but according to the preacher you heard, it might have been perfectly fine to have used them!

Actually this is just a repeat of three very old heresies. Denying the Ordained Priesthood, No need for wine, and use of water when grapes were not available.

The youth minister had us do “communion” with Doritos and Pepsi - I’m not making this up!! What an amazing experience to have the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus rather than Doritos!

Good Lord deliver us! It just goes to show what idiocies people do when they have to reinvent the wheel on doctrine and dogma. What an insult to Our Lord! How clueless could that youth director be? :bigyikes:

Yes, St Paul tells us to be carefull and not worship in vain. Here on this thread are some classic examples. Ever heard the phrase “blood is thicker than water”… what a complete insult to say Jesus had water or pepsi in his viens…

You are thinking like a catholic. To a protestant it isn’t an insult because it isn’t real, but a symbol. And in truth, for a protestant it is a symbol because they can’t consecrate it. (Though even symbolically it is pretty disrespectful)

Interestingly enough I’m curious if what Paul said would apply:

1 Cor 11:27: Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28: Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29: For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.

Sinse it isn’t truly Christ, are they casting judgment or partaking unworthily?

Another question to consider. Is it idolatrous? Consubstantiation could be (if the priest has valid orders) because the whole of the bread is not believed to be Christ, but Christ is beneath it, therefore worshiping the bread and wine along with Christ sinse they are still present.

However I don’t think what is mentioned above can be as they don’t consider it Christ; consubstantiation or other. I’m thinking it is difficult to profane the body and blood of Christ when He isn’t really present.

Please no protestant rhetoric, honest thoughts please.

Your comments, Nicene, put me in mind of a TV interview with a Baptist TV evangelist (I can’t think of his name but I can see his face) discussing what Catholics ought to change (I know, I know!). Anyway, the topic of the Eucharist came up and this Baptist preacher’s tone of voice changed to that of reverence when he used the term “holy communion”, as if it actually meant something to him. So, I agree, that while all Protestants have a form of communion, some very close to Catholic in understanding, they all have a sense that it is special, even if they believe it is only symbolic, which is why the youth director and the preacher the OP mentioned ought to have known better.

Just a tangent here.

While at consecration today I was watching while the drop of water was dripped into the chalice…and I thought of Baptism…given that we (the baptized)are the humanity that is represented beautifully by the water…it completely makes sense that we should be clean from sin when we come to be offered to be mingled with Christ…and furthermore that the mingling of the water and the wine will create an inseparable waterwine compound, this is further upgraded by the actual mingling of our body and blood with Christ when we receive Him in the Eucharist.

It is so beautiful.

re the thread: I remember Marcus Grodi in his story that he used potato chips and grape juice one time and totally felt silly doing it. It’s quite impressive for him to share something embarassing.
