I know that centering prayer and Eastern or New Age meditations are not allowed; but, if I’m interested in learning to meditate for health reasons as well as spiritual benefit, are there any forms of Christian meditation out there that are approved by the Church? If so, where can I look to get started?

lectio divina,
search that topic on this forum for good links

Lectio Divina is one of the great methods of mental prayer (meditation), but there are many different ways to do it. i would suggest getting a good book on spirituality. right now im going through Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis De Sales, and i know he has a section on mental prayer as well as a few meditations that he recomends going through. another classic meditation book (note: not a book on meditation, but rather makes a good subject for meditation) is * The Immitation of Christ.* ultimately you will have to try it for a bit till you get used to it.

also, i cant recomend Eucharistic Adoration highly enough. you should ideally practice mental prayer (or any type of prayer for that matter) in Adoration.

Thanks for the ideas- but what about non-religious meditation forms? Just for health and stress reduction?

Christian meditation contributes to health as much as any other form of meditation.

Being close to Jesus, relieves stress, which is probably the biggest danger to health.

God Bless

That’s all well and good; but I’m looking for a non-religious meditation form I could also try. Any other ideas?

Hope this helps- it works for me- I use standard youga with a medatation on the psalms or a repetitve short prayer, like the Jesus prayer.

Dear ronnette… I like to say a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, before the Blessed Sacrament… prior to Mass. It is especially good to pray for the deceased and those suffering from illness in the presence of Jesus. Hope this will be helpful to you. God bless. 🙂
