Church Concert

I visited a church of St Anthony yesterday and there was some kind of piano/ophera concert going in inside the church and the pews were filled with applauding guests.

The concert in it self was perfectly decent but in my opinion it seemed out of place and and inappropriate to be in the church. Does anyone agree?

I’ve been to many concerts in both Catholic and Episcopal churches, but…if I remember correctly, whenever the concert was in the church and not an auditorium or other room of the church building the music was always religious and never secular. Maybe this makes the difference? I don’t really know, either.

It can be quite common to have classical music/opera recitals in a Church as there are too few venues for musicians starting out, trying to make a name for themselves and make a living. Churches are either free or cheap to hire and people may give a donation as they leave. Classical music and opera are both very beautiful and they are always done in a tasteful manner. I know it’s not ideal for a Church to be used that way. But as an opera student myself I find it hard to be too critical!!!
