Church Crucifix Needed

I love a well crafted crucifix not only for the artistic and religious identity merit but for my spiritual and reflective life as well. So in my new parish I was dismayed to find no crucifix above the altar but instead some grotesque statue of dubious religious meaning.

Recently we got a new pastor and he said the statute must go and he is looking for a large Crucifix for the back wall over the altar. He is musing of one that might be over 7 feet tall. The problem is these are very expensive and he doesn’t have the money not to mention the endless design committees that cannot design a church to look better that a cheap hotel lobby.

So before we start the fund raising and sourcing out a new crucifix and fighting the bureaucracy I thought I would ask here first if you know of a large crucifix for sale or donation or trade for a large statute :o.

Hmm. I don’t know how one would go about locating them, but it would seem as though with the number of parishes being closed and church buildings being decommissioned and sold, there must be a substantial number of such items looking for new homes.

Here in NH we’re into the second decade of merging parishes. Generally the buildings that are closed are the ones that were built by immigrant communities in the late 1880s and have need of substantial, very expensive repairs. And frequently these buildings were ornately and lovingly outfitted. I wonder if by contacting the diocese (www.catholicchurchnh.org) you could find information about finding furnishings in search of new homes? There would still be costs, I’m sure, but perhaps much lower than to have something made new.
 
Are you in the United States? If so, you may wish to consider contacting the Catholic Church Extension Society to see if they can be of assistance.

And may many blessings return upon your new Pastor for taking care of that more than unsightly problem!

I would suggest contacting some Archdiocese offices - if they know they are closing Churches in their area, they may be looking for some way to preserve as much architecture as possible.

what lizanne said, also contact dioceses where lots of churches are closing, such as Cleveland and Boston, to see if they have some type of clearing house for used church items
