Hello, I have a friend w/a child struggling w/SSA. She has found some resources through Focus on the FAmily and is a little concerned that she truly understand Church teaching so she can recognize if this other info is appropriate for their family.

Can someone point me to any, preferrably recent, Church documents on homosexuality. Particularly I think she is interested in if the Church teaches it is genetic or not.

Thank you, Nicole

I would suggest you look up Courage on the web-- it is a Catholic group for people dealing with SSA… They should have resources for you.

Genetics is not the realm of the Church, it is the realm of science. The Church makes no determination in that regard, as it is not relevant to the fact that homosexual activity is intrinsically gravely disordered.

You can look up Church documents on EWTN’s document library.

Chastity and homosexuality

Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

[2359](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2359.htm’)😉 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

Whether it is genetic or not has no bearing on the fact that the Catholic Church calls this person to chastity.

Thank you so much for all of the great links. I think the reason she was interested in the genetic issue is she wondered if what she hears at this Focus on the Family seminar thing would be in any way contrary to Church teaching and perhaps lead to confusion for her child.

Thanks again, I have a lot to look up now!

Possibly- sometimes Evangelicals say “Homosexuality is wrong”…ok…then what is someone who struggles with it supposed to do? Just accept that they’re going to hell? A lot of evangelicals do not seem to understand that they do not consciously choose to have those feelings. I would encourage her be careful what sources she goes to for advice. Courage is the only apostolate to those dealing with homosexuality that has been approved by the Vatican. I’m sure there are resources there that can help your friend. Thankfully, they know about the problem now, and are dealing with it now- the older the person gets, the harder it is to deal with.

Nicole-
I concur with the previous writer, it is not helpful to simply say that something is wrong. I work in a high security prison with habitual offenders, and it is clear that punishment is not enough to deter behavior that continuously lands these men in jail, even though they clearly hate the setting. While not everyone will accept programming and assistance, those who do can benefit by learning about themselves and what is behind their behavior, and by being offered an array of other choices in order to move forward. Your friend should do her best to help her child seek answers, rather than to simply accept their behavior as “inevitable” and “unchangeable”, as society at large has now done.
