I attended the installation of Bishop Braxton in Belleville on Wednesday and it was about as tacky as modern liturgy can be. I had to suffer through an extended session of liturgical dance processing from the rear of the Church with the book of the Gospels and must say I was thoroughly disgusted by it. Now that everyone knows my opinion of the whole phenomenon, I was just wondering if people can help me out with the relevant Church documents on liturgical dance - where is it authorized, under what conditions, etc. I don’t need opinions on the activity itself, just the “legal” paperwork surrounding it. Any help would be appreciated.

What exactly happens in a liturgical dance? I’ve never witnessed this.

Most of the time I believe it is a woman in a leotard dancing around during prayers or songs doing an interpretation of the prayer/song.

Don’t forget the incense bowls, the head circlets (or reasonable facsimile) and often the “grecian robe” look.

Try and watch the video of the Papal visit to St. Louis –

We had this phenomenon during our Pentecost celebration this year. When I saw them processing in, my heart sank… but I offered it up. The first time I witnessed liturgical dance it was during an Easter extravaganza given by a large Baptist Church in a downtown auditorium. I can’t say I liked it then, either. I guess it comes from David dancing in front of the Ark, but I could be wrong. I guess I’m just old-fashioned.

look for the past thread about liturgical dancers. Cardinal Arinze made some comments on that matter
