To keep the commandment: “Thou shalt keep holy the Sabbath.”

I think that a lot of rules were put in place for our benefit. Going to church on Sunday-or Saturday night- helps keeps us focused on God. It is too easy in life to loose track of our spiritual life.

I would add on your answer deb, that we also get blessings and grace through that attendance and the sacraments we receive. That’s what sanctifies our souls, and provides the weapons to resist the temptations of evil and satan.

I think this is the best answer…and I would pay particular attention to #2182. The idea of belonging to the Holy Mother Church is one in which we have an obligation to one another, and this obligation is strengthenned by our participation in the Eucharist. We participate in being a visible sign to the world that Jesus establish His Church.

Imagine it is the year 32 AD and that you have come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Holy One of God. Imagine that you have put your faith in HIm and believe that He is your Savior.
Now imagine you find out he is going to preach at the synagogue down the street. You have come to the faith on the word of others but now you can hear his own words. But you are too tired so you sleep in and miss Him.
Imagine you are invited to the last supper, but this time you have to go to a football game, so you skip the last supper.
Imagine you have an opportunity to stand with Mary at the foot of the cross but you are too hung over to go.
Imagne that you are invited to the heavenly banquet honoring the Lamb of God, the Bridegroom, but you find the eternal liturgy boring.
If you make these choices there is something seriously wrong with your soul or your faith. That something is serious sin. The sin entailed in missing Mass is the same. These are not new events but the same events are what we participate in at Mass
