Can anyone recommend to me a comprehensive book detailing what the Church fathers taught in the earliest times of Christianity? Thanks

I find the 3 volume set by Jurgens - “The Faith of the Early Fathers” very handy. These are direct quotes from the ECF’s. In the back of the book is a Doctrinal (topical) Index for the book. (Eg. if you want to see what was said about the Eucharist, it refers you to those sections in the book.)

The full writings of the ECF’s can be found online:
newadvent.org/fathers/

One of the earliest writings is the Didache – newadvent.org/fathers/0714.htm

Early Christian Writings from Penguin Books may also warrant a look.

I find this set very handy:)

Jurgen’s Faith of the Early Fathers gets my vote as well! A complete set of the patristic writings would take up an entire book case (and a large one at that). And yet Jurgens has provided in his handy three-volume series much of the material that is most often sought. In addition to this, I personally know a Benedictine monk who teaches patristics in seminary, and he told me that Jurgen’s English translations of the original languages is very good. I personally use Faith of the Early Fathers frequently when teaching R.C.I.A. and when engaged in apologetics (the “topical index” is simply incredible).

Jurgens is the top pick of Catholic apologists everywhere. 🙂 That’s really the one to get if you’re trying to find out where Catholic doctrine was taught by the Early Church Fathers.

Although it seems redundent at this point I would also recommend the “Faith of the Early Fathers” I got all 3 for $1 at a parish books sale, I didnt realize what an amazing find that was till later but am very thankful. It contains a huge selection of the early church father writtings. It doesnt include every single thing, espically early writtings that are a book unto themselves (Such as City of God by St. Augustine which is a rather large volume)

Its a 10/10 every day of the week.

Thank you all. This sounds great! Don’t know if I will get all three volumes for a $1 😛 but will surely look into it. God Bless.
