The Catholic Church teaches that the church has been given the power to forgive sins on God’s behalf. Protestant teachers have rejected this doctrine but there are Biblical passages which support the Catholic view.
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. (Acts 7:60)

Stephen prays that God will forgive their sins. We should not forget that Stephen was ordained as a deacon.

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:15)

The person’s sins are forgiven by the prayers of the presbyters. This doesn’t fit Protestant theology and doctrine at all.
YOUR THINKING PLEASE.

GOD forgives sins. 1 John 1:9 states: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Neither the church, the priest or anyone else can forgive our sins, only God can do that. The best part is that He then forgets our sins. Isaiah 43:25 states: “I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” The Bible is very clear on the subject. We need to confess our sins to God, repent of them and go forward.

What about that “Who’s sins you forgive are forgiven, who’s sins you retain are retained” bit? Sounds pretty…clear to me. 🤷

looks around

…Oh, sheesh! I’m outta here! I don’t know why folks pester the non-Catholics, least of all in this way…

Which Protestant theology and doctrine?
Bill, you ought to know better than to make a blanket statement like this. 😃

The Augsburg Confession
Article XI: Of Confession.
1] Of Confession they teach that Private Absolution ought to be retained in the churches, although in confession 2] an enumeration of all sins is not necessary. For it is impossible according to the Psalm: Who can understand his errors? Ps. 19:12.
Article XII: Of Repentance.
1] Of Repentance they teach that for those who have fallen after Baptism there is remission of sins whenever they are converted 2] and that **the Church ought to impart absolution **to those thus returning to repentance. Now, repentance consists properly of these 3] two parts: One is contrition, that is, 4] terrors smiting the conscience through the knowledge of sin; the other is faith, which is born of 5] the Gospel, or of absolution, and believes that for Christ’s sake, sins are forgiven, comforts 6] the conscience, and delivers it from terrors. Then good works are bound to follow, which are the fruits of repentance.
7] They condemn the Anabaptists, who deny that those once justified can lose the Holy Ghost. Also those who contend that some may attain to such 8] perfection in this life that they cannot sin.

You may be reading the wrong Bible Jn20;23-23,Mt 1818, Jas 5;14-15

God works in partnership with his elect. Father / children relationships. He delegated to Christ the headship of the Church. And Christ delegated to his apostles [brothers] the desire for them to make the call on forgiving of sins those within the Church body].

Paul teaches the Church is to discipline/judge its own members … but, not to judge the non-believers. Ultimately, since the leadership of the Church is lead by the H.S. and infallible … the will of Christ is behind every sin the Church declares forgiven.

Neither the church, the priest or anyone else can forgive our sins, only God can do that. .
Yes they can … under the direction of God /// per the account in sacred scriptures. The Church always gives the glory to God. They act only in his name, and by his power.

why do some non-cathloics call Our Lord a liar, this is what He said read it ,its from the KJB its in black and white "And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:15)
Can it get any plain then this

James 5:15 is talking about the sick person to confess their sins so that they may be healed. It is called the prayer of faith. No one can forgive sins unless they have been sinned against. No person or church has that right to forgive a person of their sins

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:15)
Jesus can not make it any plainer,THEY SHALL BE FORGIVEN

Read v.14 Who does it say will raise them up? The elders or the Lord? Can’t get any more plain than that.

The Catholic Church teaches that the church has been given the power to forgive sins on God’s behalf. .
The Church also teaches that they forgive with the eternal forgiveness won by Christ alone. Its His forgiveness they give. Without His atonement death on the cross, releasing the forgiveness for those who repent, there would be no absolution words from priests like there are now.

Thats important to know.
God only can forgive sins. He also said: “All thats mine is yours”… so the priests can give forgivenes with the Forgiveness of Christ…

I dont understand how people can be so confused about this, really… Its all right there in the Bible.
“Only God can forgive sins” and a command to the Church to go and forgive too… Not either-or.

I have trouble with the whole ‘sin’ issue. God created us as imperfect and then sent his son (really himself) down to save us from our imperfections. We killed him and he stayed dead for a couple of days and then went back to heaven.

Now there is sin everywhere. Did Jesus fail in his mission? Where have His teachings left us? Not a word in 2000 years. I know he appears in the odd tree, door or cheese toastie but that’s not really helping the issue. We need guidance. Lets face it not every religion can be right. There are going to be a lot of people burning in hell because they did not have the opportunity to turn to God, never mind reject him.

I sometimes doubt that He has our best interests at heart or He would do more to encourage people to follow His teachings.

I am not sure I agree with you.

My understanding is that only Christ [God] can forgive sins.

Forgiveness according to my understanding comes from Christ through the Power of the Holy Spirit in the ministry of His Church. But to my understanding, it is STILL Almighty God doing the forgiving and healing.

Many times when the Priest pronounces absolution, I [and I am sure you] have experienced REAL healing, but it has always been my perception that we are visited by the Power of the Holy Spirit albeit acting through the priestly ministry.

The words ‘whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven’ Jn 20:21, it is my understanding that the Priest forgives through the Power of the Holy Spirit, but it is STILL the Holy Spirit doing the forgiving/excorcising and healing.

I second that.
We meet Christ in the confessional or we would not go at all 🙂

Oops sorry, :o

Misunderstood.

Well, yes, that is MY understanding and not only from John but also in Matthew ‘Whose sins you forgive they are forgiven and whose sins you retain they are retained!’

But then St Paul also bids us to examine our consciences before we partake in the Sacred Meal lest we eat and drink damnation to ourselves. 1Cor 11:29. It could equally be argued 'why would Paul warn us that to 'eat and drink unworthily, if the Meal [Eucharist] was merely symbolic? But despite Paul’s testimony, there are still some who say it is symbolic! Paul obviously believed in the Real Presence.

Because it conflicts with their personal and oh so fallible interpretation of Sacred Scripture(or,rather, their favorite preacher-of-the-moment’s personal and fallible interpretation of same:D)

Non-Catholic Christians need constant reminding that Christ gave us a Church founded on St Rock-Peter,His first vicar and Pope,NOT the Bible which came FROM the Catholic Church’s Holy Tradition and that ONLY the Holy Catholic Church has the charism of infallibility to CORRECTLY interpret Scripture as guaranteed by the Paraclete which ALSO appears in Holy Scripture. All else is gas-bagging.Hence 36,000+ Protestant sects and counting.

“Let them be One”,indeed.

Someday.
