I was almost baptized in an Apostolic Tabernacle before I knew how off-base they are. Apostolic, Tabernacle, UPC, United Pentecostal, Jesus-Name, Jesus-Only, Oneness Pentecostal are some tip-off words that a church doesn’t believe in the Trinity, and goes back to the early 20th Century at the earliest. (I summarize for those who don’t like opening pdf documents).
They believe women can never get a haircut, even a trim or fringe, under any circumstances; that men must have very short hair, almost a crewcut; no facial hair at all; that women must wear long dresses or skirts at all times, and nothing too dressy but not sloppy either; that men must wear suits and ties or tidy work gear, again not dressy, not sloppy, no matter what; even baby girls don’t wear outfits with legs or have short hair; musical instruments are forbidden, so they just sing; no makeup or hairstyling products, perms or dye or nail polish allowed; even jewelry is a little suspect; obedience is emphasized to the point that children who ask “Why?” are agonized over as rebels. I almost was one.
So why do they reinvent history? There are leaders who want to make their followers suspicious of the rest of society so as to keep them in. The followers believe it because they have nothing to compare it to, and because some grew up in it, and others grew up in anti-Catholic households of different kinds, and heard breakfast-table history through that filter as children.
