Church Hopping

I was taking to my friend yesterday and because I am getting my theology degree soon I wanted to church hop a bit. I was thinking a church every weekend or everyother weekend. It is god to broaden the mind to other faiths and learn from one another. I wanted to write down later how I felt what was done etc.

That being said I think my first church to go to is the Episcopal Church.
Any suggestions on any others? I know there are sooo many out there but I think I just want a taste. I have gone to non-christian (Synogoge and Mosques already) I want to keep this in Christian denominations.

Lutheran
Methodist
Penocostal
Presbyterian
Baptist
Orthodox

Any others you all can think of or suggest?

what exactly are you looking for in non-catholic churches for your learning experience? I think a lot of that would depend on which churches you wanted to go to.
 
I think just different ways to worship and experiencing them. Not just reading about them online
 
K if you’re looking for different ways of worship I’d save the High Church places for last, Methodist, Lutheran, Anglican etc…If you’re looking for a 360, try a non-denom, or baptist service.

One thing I would caution you, I know a handful of people that have gone on and pursue degrees in Theology, Philo etc, even from very well known Catholic Universities, and have come to very liberal understandings of Catholicism, so I would caution you to that with your studies, in addition to your interest of exploring other churches worship services…remember we have the fullness of Gods revealed truth. Other than that, enjoy spending time with our separated brothers and sisters in Christ! 👍
 
Haha- I am a pretty liberal Catholic already. I think my education at my Catholic university helped me a lot in that area. For so long I followed blindly never really studying scripture and just believing because other Catholics believed.

That being said I think other religions are neat and I have no interntion on leaving the Catholic Church 🙂

I really can’t fathom why anyone would want to do this. If you were married, would you want to try out other men?

You said you followed “blindly” what other Catholics believed. But if they believed what the Church teaches, it was based on scripture! So what is this enlightenment? And, why on God’s green earth would a person who understands theology want to try out other religions when you already have the fullness of truth?

Be careful. I think your liberal tendencies might draw you to some of these “feel good” protestant services.
 
oh this is interesting! You should post on this thread about what happened and how you felt after each visit. I’m also interested in theology as a study, and over the years, i’ve randomly visited:

LDS
Orthodox (OCA)
Catholic (Tridentine and Paul VI)
Hindu
Scientology
some sort of evangelical (had a band, pastor on the projector, etc.)
and even the Freemason headquarters in DC :eek:

There is nothing wrong with visiting other religions to see what they believe and how they worship. I and others are fascinated with the thought processes of others and how people come to various conclusions and act out those conclusions. One can study religion academically without harming their personal beliefs. This is done all the time.

Maybe try Seventh Day Adventist? Just don’t say you’re Catholic though 👍 Also First Church of Christ, Scientist, for a completely different “Christian” theology and style of…“worship”.

I would say that you belong the First Universal Church of Jesus Christ. ;).

Not to sidetrack what do you mean by liberal? Do you believe in Women’s Ordination, contraception, abortion etc? But that might be better set for another thread.

You mean, First Universal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Catholics.
 
My senior year of high school (Catholic) our religion teacher, a new priest had us go to a different church each week. We would write reports, and our thoughts about the experience. Then discuss for a week or until we ran out of discussion. We also had to obtain information from the church we attended.
Include - LDS, synagogue, all the mainline Protestant churchs, ect.
He informed us to check ahead of time to see if we needed any special permission to attend.
This was in 1962-1963 school year. We all learned so much, and most of all we really learned how to love and respect our Catholic faith.
Great learning experience.

I don’t want to get into it but no I don’t believe in abortion, contraception and I never really think of woman as priests. Thats all I’m going to say since that is not what the thread is about 🙂

You should visit a fundamentalist home church service. Let me know how it goes 😃

I would get a great laugh out of that;

“Worshiping. Can I sit next to the fire place?”*

Find the nearest non-denominational mega church :).
Pentecostal (maybe Oneness?).
Uniterian Universalist (if you would like a mix of a bunch of religions into your church hopping).
Church of Christ.

That may require airfare, and a great deal of expense unless the OP lives in the areas of the US where that is practiced. I am assuming the OP lives in the US, I did not check their status while posting this. It is very possible many places in the world, still do this.
I could be wrong, but I never heard of it happening in Chicago. Maybe I led a sheltered life.🤷
 
I think. Any kind of religious belief can not be separated from the people.

has anyone mentioned a Mosque yet? Maybe the OP could make the list and start planning out weekly, before or after mass of course :D, different places he’s going, and report back…
