Hi, starting next week I’ll be in Orlando for a couple of weeks. I would like to know what would be a good church for me to go to while I’m over there.
I just found out that a church nearby of where I’ll be staying is “Queen of the Universe Shrine”. I was wondering if someone familiar to the area can tell me if this one is a good, conservative church? If it isn’t can you recommend any others?
Thanks for your help

I’m in Miami,
but I have heard of the Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine in Orlando, and I’ve never heard anything at all negative about it.
Enjoy your visit !!
God bless,
Jaypeeto4 (aka Jaypeeto3)

Thank you so much for the response Jaypeeto 👍 It´s very good to know.

Yes, the Shrine is good. The priests all seem very orthodox, and the church itself is beautiful. They have confessions pretty much all day every day too, which is nice. Also, the gift shop there is probably the best Catholic book / gift shop in Orlando - definitely worth checking out.

If there is a downside to the Shrine, it is only that it is designed for tourists, so it doesn’t have much of a community feel. It isn’t a territorial parish.

This diocese is a perfect example of the “abomination of desolation” as described in the Tridentine Liturgy’s Gospel reading today. The shrine is nice from the outside, but on the inside it is Modernist. Even Lutherans admit it lacks devotion to Mary. Speaking of Lutherans, they descrated the shrine some years ago with their “bishop installation” and “communion service” in front of Catholic bishops (communcatio in sacris) so I’d stay away from the site until the shrine were to be reconsecrated.

EDIT have attended Mary Queen of the Universe shrine several times on holy days and Sundays, beautiful church, beautiful grounds, beautiful Masses.

On a similar note, the Archbishop of Canterbury “desecrated” the church of S. Sabina (where the Pope celebrates his Ash Wednesday liturgy) with an Anglican “Festival Eucharist” in Rome this morning.

Until the Pope decides he’s going to rededicate S. Sabina, I think it’s safe to say that the masses at the Shrine in Florida are okay to attend.

Watching news clips of a dozen female clerics with surpilces processing through St. Dominic’s church sent shivers down my spine. Was the prayer service said on the High Altar or on a makeshift altar, given that Rowan Williams isn’t even validly ordained?

Thanks puzzleannie and atsheeran for your responses.

I’m glad to know about the gift shop, I’m sure I’ll be able to find some interesting books there.
I also like the fact that it’s designed for tourists. I guess if you do live in Orlando you miss the community feel, but I think it will be interesting for me to watch people from all over. BTW would you happen to know if they have masses in Spanish? It’s not really a big deal, but I think some members of my family would prefer that if given the option.

Thanks a lot

It doesn’t look like there’s a Spanish Mass at the Shrine (at least from what’s on the WEBSITE)… but you could always call and ask!

The Shrine is GORGEOUS… definitely check out the nativity scene in the side chapel also… it’s one of our favorite places to visit during Christmas!

We LOVE the bookstore there also… lots of great stuff!
It’s right across the interstate from Disney too… so just perfect for tourists! And I love that it’s such a prominant building off the interstate… right in the middle of tourist town! Makes me so proud to have a gorgeous church visible to all the tourists in town!

Have fun on your visit!

The Shrine also has a small museum and a rosary garden. It also has an adoration chapel.
Kissimmee, not far, has a Spanish Mass

Hi, Catolico!

Just a suggestion…

You may wish to use your visit to Orlando as an opportunity to experience our Catholic faith from the Eastern Catholic perspective. There is a fine Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic parish, St. Nicholas, located in Orlando (very near the Disney theme parks). Here’s their website…

byzantines.net/StNicholas-Orlando/main.htm

Please bear in mind that this is a Catholic parish, in full communion with Rome. As a Catholic yourself, your attendance at a Sunday Divine Liturgy at this parish does “count” toward your Sunday Mass obligation, and you are absolutely free (and encouraged!) to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion (provided, of course, you are in a state of grace that would allow you to do so), just as you would at any Roman Catholic parish you may visit.

Give it some thought… what a wonderful opportunity it could be to expand your own personal relationship to our Catholic faith!

Thank you EM. It’s beautiful, it looks huge too. I’ll make sure to check out the nativity scene, thanks for letting me know.👍

Cool! They seem to have everything there. Now I don’t even care about the Spanish Mass.😉 After hearing so many great things about the Shrine from all of you, I have to go there. I don’t care if the Mass is in Chinese.😃 Thanks adrift!

Thank you so much for the suggestion pilgrim.👍 You’re right it would be a great opportunity, since I’ve never been to one of these parishes. Thank you for all the information about this, very interesting.

All right everyone, I’m logging out for a couple of weeks now. Please pray for us to have a safe trip.
God Bless You all!!
