Church teaching allows for the removal of “aggressive medical treatment” but only when it is considered futile or overly burdensome, and for terminally ill patients. Nutrition and hydration are considered “ordinary” and not “extraordinary” means and so are part of normal care; withholding them is therefore considered passive euthanasia, leaving the person to die of starvation.

What is very shoking for Alfie’s case is the ruling of the judge who said that removing life support in this case is faithfull to church teaching…

For Vincent Lambert, the issue is complicated because his wife whant him death (and considered that is already “gone”) apparently according to his own beliefs, and his parents are opposed… They are presented in the media as “integrists catholics” (traditionalists).
