Hi! I am registering my family at our parish. They have this online thing. Anyway. One of the sections they want to know our Church(es) of Baptism. Well, we are both converts, do they really want to know the protestant churches we were baptized in? Help, please! 🙂

I would suggest listing the parish where you were received into the church.

I agree with the above as you gave that information to the parish when you became Catholic. I know I did as this was required and took awhile for me to get. (some mix-up with records at my protestant church I was baptized)

I’ve found lots of good answers here at CAF. But, how can anyone here know what your parish wants? Call them and ask them if this question applies to you and if it does how they’d prefer you to answer it.

Oh I don’t know, something about the Church being universal gave me the crazy idea that others on here would know.

Seems like 2 do.

These things you ask about aren’t universal. Parishes will have there own procedures. For example, registering at a parish is AFAIK an North American practice. We don’t register at parishes in the UK. To know what your parish wants: you’ll need to ask them. I believe the other two you mention were speculating. How can they know your parish’s administrative procedures?

Why they want the info will change what they want. If they want to know where your baptismal certificate is located, it’s the church of conversion. If they want to know that your baptism is valid or to know which Catholic Church sui iuris you belong to, it’s the actual place you were baptized.

Bergon is right. You’ll need to ask your parish why they want the info to know which place to put. If you have to err without asking them, err on the side of listing the Protestant Church. You answer the question presented, let them know the baptism is valid and which Catholic Church sui iuris you belong to. It’s obvious then that they need to ask you where your Catholic birth certificate is maintained if that’s what they want to know.

Answering with the Catholic Church of conversion is not answering the question asked and can lead them incorrectly regarding Church sui iuris ascription and it isn’t obvious that they should follow up to clarify if they use it for that purpose.

Use where you were received into the Church in your RCIA program. If the new parish has any questions the Church of reception will have all the records. We did the same when we moved and registered in our current parish. 👍

If the online form allows it I’d leave some answers blank. Or put a question mark there.
The parish can contact you for more info or you call them later to give details.
