Hi.

So I am in a state of flux, I desire the magisterium and I love the notion of the Catechism. I am being drawn to the idea that Christ did build his Church on Peter and the line of apostles are represented by the Church today. However I still have many many hang ups with the Catholic Faith.

However, what intrigued me was one day during work I stopped by a beautiful Church of England church. I had no intention of speaking to anyone, I just went there to read the daily reading. The Vicar however asked me if I enjoyed my job (I was wearing an NHS name badge), I said “yes, do you?” He smiled.

I told him my struggle for clarity in Scripture, how it’s possible to have numerous doctrines all based on the same Book. He told me he knew exactly what I meant. He told me to struggle on and that if we don’t, things will never progress. I would have liked to ask, “progress to where?” But I didn’t, however this idea of struggling with Scripture to progress sounded very rational. What are your thoughts? I found it an interesting potential sign post as I’m looking at a Chruch change.

Being perfect is by the grace of God. The Saints are perfect.

Faith in action is a struggle with God, and we act by using Scripture, as understood from Authority (The Church founded on Peter and given the keys by Jesus), and sacraments.

Who created your Church?

Catholic: My Church, the only true Church, was established by Our Lord Jesus Christ upon Peter, His rock.
Anglican: My church was created by an authoritarian murdering king with marital issues.

I assumed it was through our struggles with everything on earth - Scripture, Church teaching, Church authority, daily life, trying to live more closely to Jesus’ teachings - that we progress, growing in our relationship with God.

My takeaway is that anything worth having, including a relationship with God, takes effort…

I read this rather as a Protestant response to your question about “how there can be numerous doctrines (assuming you mean interpretations?) based on the same Book.” It is, of course, an excellent question. But I’m glad as a Roman Catholic that 2000 years of the magisterium’s and saints’ teaching on the interpretation of Scripture means I don’t have to personally struggle to come to individual conclusions. I can rest on the wisdom of Mother Church.

Stick to what has been passed down as tradition. Interpretation of scripture has been passed down and so has the living faith found in the Eucharist (Jesus).

St. Paul even said to stick to tradition.
