Because Anglicans rank third* on the “Most Catholic” list.
  • Well, of course that’s only assuming that you count the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox as one category instead of two, and don’t count tiny groups like the Assyrian Church of the East and PNCC.
And squint sideways at the Anglican big picture.

World-wide, the Anglican Churches (plural) are doing just fine. Africa in particular.

But in the developed world, not so much.

Right, and the Church of England is about half of the Anglican Communion.

I don’t know how these numbers are worked out, or if it is fair to compare them at all, but the figure often given for the Communion is 80m, and there are reckoned to be about 25m baptised in the CofE. The church itself says 4 out of 10 in England claim to be members, and since England has a population of about 53m that’s not far off the same figure. So to say “about a quarter” might be reasonable today although, as GKC says, numbers are thought to be growing in the Third World.

I had not looked up the figures, either of the CoE, or the CoE as a portion of the Communion. Too tired. But this fits my memory. Total for the Communion I do recall as usually given closer to 70 million, but who knows.

Thanks for that clarification. I knew the CoE was less than half, but I thought it was close.
