Recently, in an article entitled “Solemn Latin Mass in Washington stirs change in Catholic liturgy,” the editor of Inside the Vatican writes:

But at least one Vatican official I talked to, also in the past month, told me he believes the future is solely and exclusively in a return to the old rite. “The old rite is our past, and it will be our future,” he told me. “The new Mass is a passing phase. In 50 years, that will be entirely clear.”

What do you think the official means that this “will be entirely clear?”

Are we facing a disaster and thus will turn to the old rite and atone for our sins?

Any link or support for this statement?

Speculating on a future after we are dead and gone is easy. There is no way to prove or disprove the future. I know one Catholic official that said there can be no question of going back. He is now know as the Holy Father.

Wow! It looks like some people in the Vatican haven’t much faith in the work of the Holy Spirit in directing the current Roman Rite.

Sure they do. They have faith that the Holy Ghost will direct the Roman Rite to a greater emphasis of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

With respect to your specific questions:
What do you think the official means that this “will be entirely clear?”
I would think he meant, time will show that I will be proved correct.
Are we facing a disaster and thus will turn to the old rite and atone for our sins?
No.

With respect to the rest,
Recently, in an article entitled “Solemn Latin Mass in Washington stirs change in Catholic liturgy,” the editor of Inside the Vatican writes:

It is good for the Vatican to have people with different points of view. This keeps the “mind of the Church” on all aspects of the various issues it faces, and it allows the Holy Father to draw on advice that has been tested and strengthened against opposing viewpoints. That said, it’s on the level of astrology or fortunetelling – though entirely natural and understandable – to find the one person who predicts what you would personally like to be the case and think, “The man’s a veritable prophet!” In other words, to find one unnamed “Vatican official” who has said something you agree with and ascribe overwhelming significance to it, when you would have ascribed absolutely no significance to a report that six dozen Vatican officials had predicted that the Mass of Paul VI will still be around, likely with varying degrees of modification, in fifty years.

Looks like here’s one link, the article is by Robert Moynihan. He’s been on CAL before.speroforum.com/a/31599/Solemn-Latin-Mass-in-Washington-stirs-change-in-Catholic-liturgy

Can you read minds? :hypno:
I’m not quite getting the significance of how that’s a response to the portion of my text you quoted.

But to see if I can be a little clearer, what I mean is that there’s a danger in the kind of thinking that hears this kind of report about an unnamed Vatican official of unknown stature, and immediately thinks, “Does this mean the world is facing a great disaster?” In other words, one oughtn’t to ascribe mystical predictive power to the secondhand report of some unknown person’s opinion. If one does, it is probably because it jibes with one’s own already-existing preconceptions.

In that regard, I notice that the OP didn’t quote the preceding paragraph from the article:
How this will all work out, of course, is yet to be seen. At least one Vatican official I talked to recently told me he believes the future of the Church’s liturgical life will be a type of fusion between the old Mass and the new Mass of Paul VI.
and ask, “Are we facing a disaster and thus will turn to a fusion between the old Mass and the new Mass and atone for our sins?”, even though it would have made just as much sense to do so.

I thought this thread title was kind of fishy. I found the article, since it was not linked.

Here is the context of this statement.
How this will all work out, of course, is yet to be seen. At least one Vatican official I talked to recently told me he believes the future of the Church’s liturgical life will be a type of fusion between the old Mass and the new Mass of Paul VI.

This is the view of many. But at least one Vatican official I talked to, also in the past month, told me he believes the future is solely and exclusively in a return to the old rite.
My thought, is that the selection of one quote without the other is deceptive. I found that at least one secondary source did the same out of context quote (Remnant magazine).

I do not approve of spinning an article to say something that the author does not say. I do not blame the OP, though, as he may well have got this from a secondary source. However, when a magazine or blog that misconstrues meaning by selective quotation, it does reveal a willingness to damage the truth in pursuit of an agenda. Again, I linked the original article (first link) so anyone can see how far afield the one quote used was from the meaning of the article.

Among other difficulties, a strong movement in the direction of re-establishing the old rite would quickly run into the obstacle of intelligent and principled scrutiny. While it hides in the corner, so to speak, it is possible to accept the Mass as our grandparents knew it without reservation because there is no motive for re-examining it. But how long do you think it will be before people once again start to realize that it began before it began, ended after it ended, included an extra confiteor for the priest, stuck an arbitrary gospel reading at the tail end, swerved momentarily from Latin to Greek, and rubrically confused garb with vestments? And I have only scratched the surface of the dilemma. The old rite was not abandoned lightly, nor can it be lightly retrieved.

Lies.

The old rite was not abandoned lightly, but to the vast peril of souls across the whole world.

Robert: The Will of GOD will be done one way or another. So if , put another way , we are to believe that Immodest Dress , Irreverence and Guitars and Clowns and Homosexual and Women Priests are are in our Future as opposed to a return to traditional Catholicism - I’d have to opt for the latter.

There have been periods of rebellion and chaos in the Church before. Unfortunately we may be living through one know. The Holy Spirit may have created the Novus Ordo in order to protect the TLM from the abuses and creativity of the past forty years. Future generations may develop a stronger attachment and participation in the liturgy due to the consequences of passivity we’ve shown. By their fruits you shall know them and the past forty years have not been the Church’s best.

I think that there will be something very similar to what is done at EWTN. Some Latin, the majority in the vernacular.

Priest facing the altar, not the folks–which just makes better sense.

I agree with pnewton that speculation is never a good thing, especially without a substantiating, influential enough source. I can say that I would be extremely happy if htat were the case. I pray for that to be the case daily.

I do disagree with pnewton on one thing though; I plan on being alive still in 50 years LOL. I don’t want to be gone 😉

Interesting speculation on the part of ALL. However, I’ll just pray real hard for the return of the old Mass.
