Has anyone received the purple prayer rug with the Holy Face of Jesus on it? They say it is from the 53 year old St. Matthew’s Church. What did you do with it?

I did a quick search and found someone’s article. I don’t know how reliable the source is and what the rug is all about, but here is a part of the article:
After a little checking, I find that Purple Jesus is the brainchild of LA millionaire James Eugene Ewing, who apparently lives very high on the hog with the money raised “praying” for millions of ------- impressed enough by the staring eyes of Purple Jesus to send him money…which of course offends the competition to no end.

I did some more search and it seems that there were many receiving this in mail. I’ll stay away from this.

I can’t believe they would use the Holy Face. I think its a waste of such a good holy picture. Its also offensive to Jesus. Why on earth would we kneel on the image of His face? I thought the custom was to venerate the image as opposed to kneeling on it. Also, why would we “Pray for God to bless me with this amount of money” I will just properly discard the letter and image in a respectable manner.

Well, I buried the rug. Anyone else out there get this letter?

Why get rid of the rug? Even if you personally don’t like the image enough to keep it (and treat it reverently rather than kneeling on it) there may be people you know who’d like it.

I remember getting this in the mail some time ago. I’m ordinarily extremely suspicious of any superstitious-sounding instructions (“don’t keep this longer than a day”, “you must forward this to at least 10 people”, etc.), so I didn’t respond to the mail. I don’t remember what I did with the “rug”.

I didn’t get a real rug, I got a cheesy 8x10 paper “rug.” I also got another letter from them about a year later. It sounded like the whole thing was a scam to get money. I threw it out.

If this is a mailing which sends an unsolicited article and asks for payment, you are free to do whatever you like with the object and throw the solicitation away. If it asks for money under threats of bodily or spiritual harm, it possible violates USPS regulations and the whole thing should be turned over to your postmaster.

The “rug” I received was also a piece of paper. You were supposed to sit with it on your lap, and there were a lot of instructions on just how long you were supposed to hold onto it, and to whom to return it. The mailing made a lot of “promises” as to what would happen if you “used” the “rug” and returned it promptly. Of course, the paper you were supposed to return with the “rug” solicited donations. That last bit is usually the dead giveaway.

I get several unsolicited items every month; some quite nice. Whatever I get goes either to sister to use for prizes in CCD if it has any quality, otherwise into the trash. I never acknowledge receipt of it. However, the senders never get discouraged.

Well, I wanted to keep it but I was advised to bury the rug in a respectful manner like with a sacramental.

I thought the whole kneeling on the purple colored rug with the Holy Face did not sound right at all. Why kneel on the Holy Face?
