I’ve seen this site before and I find it quite interesting. The amount of research that went into a project of this size has to be quite staggering. Before I’d ever seen this site I wondered if something like he describes happened: namely how far back can bishops actually trace their lineage? His reseach seems to describe that over 90% of current Catholic bishops can trace their consecration lineage back to Cardinal Rebiba, who was appointed a bishop in 1541.

I don’t see this information in any way calling into question the truth of Apostolic succession but a simple realization that information such as this can “disappear into the fog of time.” Church records and civil records from all time periods get destroyed due to age, fire, war, simple neglect and other reasons.

Montalban, do you know of any comparable research done for Orthodox bishops? Do you suspect that the same thing holds true for Orthodox bishops or is the lack of historical information more acute?

It’s very extensive. If you want to trace your church’s Apostolic Succession back from the present bishop it’s pretty cool - I don’t know how far back it goes

However, it DOES have unexplained omissions, such as the Most Reverend John Michael Botean of the Romanian Catholic Eparchy of St. George in Canton (Ohio). (And yes, the Diocese’s name is bigger than the Diocese! :-0 )

Traced our bishop back to a cardinal in 1566. Then I tried tracing that cardinal back to the pope. I found this cardinal’s name at the bottom of the list where it says:

Episcopal Lineage / Apostolic Succession:

**Pope Joseph Ratzinger (1977) **
Bishop Josef Stangl † (1957)
Archbishop Josef Schneider † (1955)
Joseph Cardinal Wendel † (1941)
Bishop Ludwig Sebastian † (1917)
Archbishop Johann Jakob von Hauck † (1912)
Bishop Ferdinand von Schlör † (1898)
Archbishop Joseph von Schork † (1891)
Archbishop Franz Joseph von Stein † (1879)
Archbishop Friedrich von Schreiber † (1875)
Archbishop Gregor (Leonhard Andreas) von Scherr, O.S.B. † (1856)
Antonio Saverio Cardinal De Luca † (1845)
Giacomo Filippo Cardinal Fransoni † (1822)
Pietro Francesco Cardinal Galeffi † (1819)
Alessandro Cardinal Mattei † (1777)
Bernardino Cardinal Giraud † (1767)
Pope Carlo della Torre Rezzonico † (1743)
Pope Prospero Lorenzo Lambertini † (1724)
Pope Pietro Francesco (Vincenzo Maria) Orsini de Gravina, O.P. † (1675)
Paluzzo Cardinal Paluzzi Altieri Degli Albertoni † (1666)
Ulderico Cardinal Carpegna † (1630)
Luigi Cardinal Caetani † (1622)
Ludovico Cardinal Ludovisi † (1621)
Archbishop Galeazzo Sanvitale † (1604)
Girolamo Cardinal Bernerio, O.P. † (1586)
Giulio Antonio Cardinal Santorio † (1566)
Scipione Cardinal Rebiba †

**Anybody? Can you explain what this means? ** Is this who tagged who? from the pope to the cardinal?

So, could I trace a given diocese Bishops’ Apostolic succession back to the Apostles? How would I do this. This is wonderful!
I don’t guarantee that! (see post earlier)

The list you posted is of the main celebrants who consecrated the most recent person in the list as bishop. So depending on how many people Bishop Stangl consecrated as bishops Pope Benedict will have several brother bishops that have been consecrated by Bishop Stangl. I believe the website linked on this thread also has, where possible, the co-concelebrants list along with the main celebrants during the consecrations.
