Im currently in RCIA and have been coming on and off for a few years now. I have made up my mind that im pretty sure the Catholic Church is for me (I was baptised and raised baptist). My question is I have been dating a girl for almost a year and we have been talking about marriage and were getting pretty close to setting a date before I got involved in the Church again. My question is If we decide we should be together and its our purpose and what the Lord wants then should I wait and complete RCIA first before the marriage or is it something that can be recognized by the church later on?(it would be another year until I could come in during easter) She is baptised as well as a baptist is very relegious and neithier of us have been married before. I have discussed all that I understand so far about the faith with her ie; about the Children needing to be raised Catholic as well as no contraception. She seems ok with everything im just not sure of the right steps seeing as im not Catholic right now. Thanks for the help and prayers
 
You do not have to be Catholic to have a valid marriage. Assuming that you have accurately described your situation, the Church would recognize the validity of your marriage.
 
Talk to your pastor about this. You can marry either before or after entering the Church but you should follow the Catholic marriage preparation program. Of course, you should talk to you girlfriend about how you would raise the children and church attendance.
 
If you get married before coming into the church, as baptized christians you would have a valid marriage but not sacramental. I do believe then once you came into the church your marriage would become sacramental. So either way would work out. But, as the earlier poster said, if you plan on becoming catholic your parish may want you to do marriage prep and that will take a while.

As baptized Christians, their marriage would be both valid and sacramental. You do not have to be Catholic to have a sacramental marriage.

While not a bad idea, marriage prep is not required for non-Catholics - even if they plan to enter the Church at some time in the future.
