I want straight up answers here:

Envy of anothers spiritual good?- Still a mortal sin? I ask because in the old examination of conscience books (Pre-Vatican 2), this was listed as a mortal sin. Plus I read about it in only two other sources as being “worse” than envy and the other one came out and said “mortal sin”.

So is it?

What would this sin constitute? Envy of Priests? Seminarians? Others who Ask that they have a vocation?

I ask because this is something I am struggling with, and I want to know just exactly what I’m looking at.

Or would this mean that I envy someone who can speak in tongues, gifts of the Holy Spirit etc?

What does this consititue? Envying a grace of someone??

please help, I don’t know the gravity of this sin, I know its mortal, but then there is no other official statement, so now I am confused as to whether this is still mortal or not?

It used to be listed among the Sins of the Holy Spirit

Ok, I’ll be the first to say it.

Ask your spiritual director. You did find one to take the place of the one you could never see and couldn’t communicate with easily, didn’t you, mmm?

I’d be interested to know what is meant by ‘envy’ in this context. The word has very mild connotations for me. But if it is a sin, then it must mean much more than the simple admiration of something belonging to someone else, which is how I think of it!

You have started at least 8 threads on this subject, probably more.

You don’t seem to be taking any advice given to you, in fact, just the opposite, you seem to relish in bringing up the same things over and over and over again.

Get a Spiritual adviser.

You should be learning more about what “envy” means in order to realize whether or not you are even envious at all.

A spiritual director can get this straight.

I can only quote the Catechism, specifically this part.
The sensitive appetite leads us to desire pleasant things we do not have …] these desires are good in themselves; but often they exceed the limits of reason and drive us to covet unjustly what is not ours and belongs to another or is owed to him.
Which of the two are you experiencing and calling “envy”?
When the Law says, “You shall not covet,” these words mean that we should banish our desires for whatever does not belong to us. Our thirst for another’s goods is immense, infinite, never quenched.
However:
It is not a violation of this commandment to desire to obtain things that belong to one’s neighbor, provided this is done by just means.
Now about envy itself, and what it really is:
Envy is a capital sin. It refers to the sadness at the sight of another’s goods and the immoderate desire to acquire them for oneself, even unjustly. When it wishes grave harm to a neighbor it is a mortal sin
Now you may re-evaluate what you are feeling based on what the Catechism defines as envy: is there a match? Are you saddened by what they have and have an immoderate desire to acquire that regardless of whether this is just or unjust?
Envy represents a form of sadness and therefore a refusal of charity; the baptized person should struggle against it by exercising good will. Envy often comes from pride; the baptized person should train himself to live in humility
Overall we should be glad when other people have things we wish we had: for it is by giving that we receive.

Get a new, up to date book. Why are you going with a pre-Vatican 11 book? Theology is evolving as it should. You know, when my brother was younger than you, not even 17 at the time, he was on the front lines of Korea…defending your freedom of religion and everthing else. I think you need to "grow’ and evolve, too. Join something and do good!

I was wondering in circumstances that I have mentioned…

If I ask the LORD JESUS to bless whomever I may be envying, is this a sign that I haven’t given in? Or at least not completley in?

Envy is a stupid emotion. How on earth can I fight it? I don’t want it, I dont enjoy it, I wish I wasn’t. All I have is “LORD JESUS please bless --------------- -------- and protect ------ -----”. This is my usual prayer when I “feel” envious. I dont know if its enough though…

If you…yourself, are spiritually mature and have a deep love for all that is good and of God, there would be no envey, but an outpouring of the Living Christ from within you. But…spiritulaity is a “forever” search. I don’t see how a truly spiritual person can be envious, but joyful for another person that has found God in all things. I hope you find some measure of happiness because it isn’t spiritual envy that ails you.

Much like all the threads Christians start on masturbation and homosexuality 😉

C,mon, when the same person starts thread after thread asking the same question over and over again - you gotta wonder what’s really going on there 🤷

Admiration is different than envy. If we admire someone we may seek them out as a mentor is they are willing, but wanting what others want is coveting with is sinful. You must concentrate on yourself. Someones else spirituality is not helpful to you, but you might ask them what they do, books they read , etc, but it comes down to you. You waste energy wanting what someone else has when you should be working on yourself.
