I was just wondering what the Church taught in regards to the Catholic Charismatic Movement…or what your opinion is of it? I am interested, but don’t want to put my soul in harm’s way if it is something controversial. God Bless!

The movement was supported by John Paul II. That being said it has been my experience that some Charismatic Catholic Prayer Groups and Communitys( as in commune) were/are quite orthodox, but some from time to time have gone off the rails. It is a valid Catholic form of spirituality.

please search on this topic on its proper forum, spirituality, for many, many threads answering your question.

I’ve attended many Charismatic Masses and a couple of Charismatic Conferences in the last 4-5 years. It’s important to attend with an attitude of praising God and letting the Spirit come to you as He wills. So many people get hung up on the experience of tongues and resting in the Spirit. I have experienced those gifts on occassion, but I don’t go ‘seeking’ those things, if that makes any sense. The laying on of hands is a very special part of the Mass, but it’s important to trust the Spirit and let Him gift you with what He thinks would be beneficial for your spiritual growth and the building up of the Church. Just because you don’t speak in tongues or ‘rest’ in the Spirit doesn’t mean that He hasn’t given you a special gift. It just might not be apparent until later.

I certainly don’t think you are putting your soul in harm’s way. I feel like my spirituality has grown leaps and bounds since attending my first Charismatic Mass. But it is important to focus on God’s will for your life, rather than seeking the “experience” of praying in tongues or resting in the Spirit just for the sake of having an experience.

Hope this helps a little!

Thank you so much, Deidre. That’s exactly what I needed to hear! May God Bless you!
