Churches in Ventura, CA

Hi folks,

I grew up in Ventura, CA, but have been living in CO for the last four years. I brought my fiance to visit may family and spend the holidays in warmer weather, and he absolutely loves it here and would like to move here, if it be God’s will. The problem we’re running into, however, is finding a Mass and a parish that suit us. We’re looking for just a very straightforward, no nonsense, orthodox liturgy (vernacular, please), but at least going by the Masses we’ve attended, these seem to be in short supply. We’d be willing to travel up to about 30 minutes, so I don’t think we’d rule out parishes in Santa Barbara or Thousand Oaks.

I believe the Ventura Mission may be the only parish in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles that offers the Extraordinary form (Latin Mass) every Sunday. I know that’s not what you are looking for but you might want to check out the priest(s) that normally offer that Mass and see when/where they celebrate Mass otherwise.

It’s been my experience that the parishes in the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region (Ventura is more or less in the middle) vary from mass to mass. You might want to check out the different times Masses are offered at the three Ventura parishes.

Whenever we visit family, we go to St. Charles Borromeo, but that is in North Hollywood right off the 101. It’s very orthodox and a lovely church. It’s a bit farther afield than you indicated you want to drive, but it’s a straight shot on the 101 on a Sunday morning… so maybe not out of the realm of possibility.

I’ve also been to the Mission in Santa Barbara, and nothing went on there that I would consider abusive.

I have heard good things. The fact that it has 4 priests and 3 deacons bodes well for it.
