I’ve just saw a picture of the Church that I attended when I was a child. It’s looks so different to how I remembered it. I can’t see the statues or pictures on the walls or anything like that. I don’t know if my memory of this Church is faulty or if I had just forgotten what it looked like but it is different to me nonetheless.
I was recently in an Anglican Church and this looked more ‘Catholic’ than my old childhood Church. I am surprised by this. The Anglican Church had a screen and a large altar, whereas my old Church has a concrete stand-alone altar. The Anglican Church had stained glass windows and the Catholic Church had clear glass windows. It just seems strange.
My Dad recently told me that back in the late 70’s and early 80’s he and the construction company he worked for had to demolish the insides of a church. He says he can remember feeling remorseful about having to smash the old marble high altar with a sledgehammer to make way for a new ‘concrete table’ (his words). He said that it felt wrong to gut the place but that they had to do it.
Anyway, are there still traditional Churches with the high altars, the stained glass windows, the paintings, the statues, and the reed screen etc? Or are these churches now are rarety. I know that I’d rather attend one of these churches when I start going to Mass again.
