‘Ciao Paolo’: Last Farewell For Italy’s 1982 World Cup Hero Rossi​

Hundreds gathered to bid farewall to Italy’s 1982 World Cup hero Paolo Rossi during an emotional funeral ceremony in Vicenza Cathedral on Saturday.

Rossi’s World Cup-winning teammates carried the simple wooden coffin of the forward known as ‘Pablito’ before and after the ceremony in the city’s Duomo.

“If I am world champion I owe it to him,” said former Italy defender Fulvio Collovati.

Within 6 weeks of Diego Maradona passing, known especially for that 1986 World Cup, the hero of Italy’s 1982 World Cup winning campaign, Paolo Rossi passed on as well. So, likewise, rest in peace Paolo Rossi. Shocking to har about as well. That 1982 World Cup final may have been the first carried on American TV. Our nation didn’t really follow it way back then though, a long, long time ago, the 1920s and so on, there was a bit of a following, baseball and American football won out though in popularity.
