Cincture Knot (sort of)

I just purchased a new cincture for my alb and it came with this really nice row of knots that keeps it nice and short. It looks similar to the one below. Anyone know what type of knot(s) these are and how you tie them? I’d like to learn so I can retie it when I store it in my vestment bag so it doesn’t hang real long.

It’s a crocheting pattern can chain stitches. Instead of using a hook to make the stitches, you’re pulling the cord with your fingers.

To add to the posts here. It’s called a drummers’ knot or drummers’ plait.

If you look closely at military bands, you will see it on their drums and much smaller and more fiddly than the chunky effect we sacristans can get with cinctures, alas.

If you keep to a consistent direction when pulling through the loops, it’s possible to impress the altar=servers by just pulling the top one through to unravel the whole thing with a brisk shake.

This is just a series of slip knots - used a lot in Scouting for various applications. Same with the other video below.

I hear performing surgery is easy too if you know what you are doing. 🙂

I just tried it at the office with an extension cord and I made a mess. 😄 I think that’s because the cord was quite stiff and not as long and a cincture. I’ll try this later tonight wit the cincture to see if I have better luck.

I see a number of you said that you braid your extension cords like this. Do you think these small braids might wear out the electrical cords when you do this? I had a friend who did a lot of stage type work and he was very particular on how he wrapped his cords as he said he wanted them to last a long time and not put stress on them. I guess for an average household outdoor extension cord it may not be that big of a deal though.

An excellent point. The copper strands in the extension cord are weakened by repeated bending, and sharper bends (smaller bend radius) are worse than broader bends. I would guess loose braiding once in a while, as for long-term storage, would not be a problem at all, while tight braiding daily would soon damage the copper strands inside the cord.
