Circumcision: is it moral?

I have no idea what my opinion on this issue is. Here in America don’t most doctors just circumcise newborn boys automatically? I don’t get how being circumcised or not is better than the other. How many men remember their circumcision? I’m confused on this issue but worried about it since I might someday give birth to a little boy.

No, that’s unlawful as of 1969 I believe. Informed Consent is required - and you have to sign a form.

And even with “Informed Consent”, lawsuits can and have happened in the United States about this issue against consenting parents and the doctor who performed the operation. Think about how THAT would split up a family!

Its more of an ethics issue of forcing a bodily modification on someone than a “one way is better than another” issue.

Thank you, obviously I don’t know much about this. Which I guess I shouldn’t as a 21 yr old single female!:o

I think if I am ever presented with such a decision for a child of mine I will spend much time in prayer over it, definitely.

Hey, you should know a lot about it as a 21 year old single female!

I read about some of the most random stuff because I have nothing better to do as a 23 year old single male, lol! What can I say? I just like to learn about stuff.

Age is no excuse! 😛

She is 21, I’m 22 and your 23 😃
I should know even less about circumcision since I’m European 😛
In Sweden and UK for example, circumcision is being legally questioned. My friend who is a Muslim couldn’t find a doctor who will perform circumcision on his son.
In Australia when you grow up you can sue the doctor who performed your circumcision.
My problem with circumcision is that it’s forced upon babies, people can argue that it has benefits but still the fact remains that the baby isnt sick :coffeeread:

I see babies with pierced ears all the time. Is this wrong? Is it abuse? As far as I know there is absolutely no medical benefit to piercing a babies ears and it is a procedure that is forced upon the baby. Is it moral?

I would never do it to a baby! I get a little upset when I see infants with pierced ears. I mean… why? That should also be a choice thing in my view, especially since the incidence of infection occurring after piercing is relatively high. The last thing as a parent that I would want to do is say, “Sorry that your ear lobe had to be amputated, it got really infected when we had it pierced because we thought it would look ‘cute’.”

At least piercings can generally close up, mostly, so this procedure is generally reversible. No one in my blood-related family had ear piercing forced on them, either. Actually, most members of my family haven’t even chose ear piercing for themselves - not my cousins, not most of my aunts, not my mother - in fact, the only ones that I know of who have pierced ears in my family are the ones who married into the family, and one of my mom’s sisters.

I would never pierce my childs ears, but its not as bad as permantly removing a part of your childs genitalia.

Some people say baptism is forced upon babies & they should be allowed to make their own decision when they’re older.
At what point does society or government make decisions re. parental rights?

My parents actually said that, too.
😛

Of course you know that I chose the right route in life. 😃

Baptism is spiritual (i think  ), and the child confirms it later in life.
Nothing is “done” to the childs body.

While being conservative in many things that are morally mandated, homosexuality, abortion, multi-marriages, etc., if it directly affected me permanently, it was always up to me - besides the required vaccinations.

Actually, it was usually up to me anyway since they were indecisive as anyone you’ve ever seen - I even picked out most of the building materials for their house - I was 12-14 then. :rotfl:

My mother survives and she’s still that way - “I don’t know… what do you think?” Usually, it’s a lot of fun. But, sometimes, it’s annoying as she’ll follow up with the comment, “I don’t know if I like it,” where I state, “Then why didn’t YOU pick it out?” 😉

Of course it’s spiritual, but still falls into the category of parents making decisions for their children. There are movements in society that would restrict parental rights. These seem to be growing, especially in Europe.
Baptism leaves a permanent “seal” or mark on the soul. How much more important is the soul than the body?
The whole circumcision thing boils down to a parent having the freedom to make a decision re. their child’s health. As Catholics we have the freedom-at least in America- to still make this choice based on careful review of the pros & cons.

If doctors circumsized newborns without asking the parents they open themselves up to a lawsuit.

That’s the thing - your child’s health. What about when they are no longer a child? Their body is still changed from it was as God created. This was (and is) my argument through this entire thread.

Of course perents make decisions for their childdren, but how many of them are irreversible, and involve sugery without the child being sick;)
And why can’t parents in America cut any part of the girls genitalia (i know it’s not the same thing), but still why would it be forbidden (especially type 1)
And i have a problem with parents treating their children like cars, it’s their child so they can do whatever they want to him/her as long as they think it’s right 🤷

I am against body piercings also but my ears are done, when I was 36, my MIL talked me into it. I often don’t wear any. My right ear tends to get itchy and infected no matter how clean I try to keep it. I clean the earings too and try to find the better ones.

I have seen some strange piercings and terrible infections especially of the eyebrow and has left some women scarred.

This is a sad thing we do to our babies. I don’t think it looks cute, to have the baby ear pierced.
