Circumcision of Christ: future mystery of the Rosary? Perhaps one of the Five *Surprising" Mysteries? 👍

I thought this already was a Mystery - part of the Presentation at the Temple.

^That’s what I thought, too.

What would you make as the other 4 “Surprising” mysteries, Madaglan?

the Circumcision of the Lord (which used to be the name of this Holy Day) occured 8 days after his birth, probably in Bethlehem, and the Presentation, another feast Feb. 2, was 40 days after his birth, in Jerusalem, again as recorded in the gospel. They are two different events but united in demonstrating his parents’ obedience to the Law and his Jewishness as essential to fulfilling Messianic prophesy.

i too would like to see OP’s suggestions for the “surprising” mysteries.

Oh really? I usually think of the presentation in front of St. Simeon.

The celebration of the Feast of the Circumcision falls on a different date than the Feast of the Presentation…

Christ was circumcised on the 8th day following his Nativity. In between the Circumcision and the visit to the Temple, there was a period of 33 days of purification for Mary, according to the Law of Moses.

(I wrote this before reading puzzleannie’s post)

Yes, you are right! 😃
  1. Circumcision of Christ
  2. Five Husbands of Samaritan Woman
  3. Walking on Sea of Galilee
  4. Walking through Walls
  5. Walking with the Emmaus-Bound Pair
I guess Christ was surprised at the first one only–but yeah, on second thought, he probably saw it coming!

I’d be surprised if I had four or five spouses and some “random” person knew it. The disciples thought Jesus was a ghost as he walked on the sea! The disciples were quite frightened when Jesus entered a locked room in his glorified body. And he surprised the two men on the road to Emmaus!

Hi, I am an Eastern Catholic wandering into the traditional forum and dont usually post here. Just wanted to add that that I do remember when I was a small child this being the feast of the Circumcision in the Latin Church, it still is observed as that in the Byzantine Catholic Church and I think the other Eastern Catholic Churchs as well. What I don`t know is why the change of the name of this Holy Day in the Latin Church? Thanks

I think a couple of impromptu meals (aka freeloading?) should qualify as surprising mysteries.
  • “Zaccheus: Come down from that tree! I’m having dinner at your house today!”
  • “Go into the city and follow a man with a water jar. When he enters the house, say to him “The Master and twelve of his friends are coming for Passover. Hope you have an Upper Room.””

It seems the Solemnity of Mary was the original name of the feast in the West, but slowly became identified with the Circumcision of the Lord. The new name appears to be a return to the original name and Marian emphasis that the feast once held in the West.

Good ones! 👍

Another surprising mystery:
“Who touched me!? I felt the power going out of me!”

Well, a while back some of my friends and I came up with the Slumberful Mysteries, all celebrating sleep. They included
  1. Gabriel appears to Joseph in a dream
  2. The angel tells Joseph to take Mary and Jesus into Egypt, in a dream
  3. Jesus Sleeps on the Sea of Galilee
  4. The Apostles fall asleep in the Garden
  5. Mary’s Dormition

2&3 would be covered by the 3rd Luminous Mystery – The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God.

4&5 are covered by the 1st Glorious Mystery – The Resurrection.

Don’t think of the mysteries as super narrow views. They are a focal point on a part of the Gospel, but the Rosary as a whole is concerned with the whole Gospel.

The Joyful Mysteries deal with the Gospel from the beginning (Incarnation) up until the beginning of Christ’s Public Ministry. This includes things that aren’t explicit in the letter of the titles, such as: the Magi; the sojourn in Egypt; His hidden life in Nazareth; etc. Even the Messianic prophecies and types of the OT could be meditated upon with these mysteries.

The Luminous Mysteries focus on the entirety of Christ’s Public Ministry up to and including Holy Thursday. All the parables, healings, miracles, etc. are fodder for meditation with these mysteries.

The Sorrowful Mysteries focus on the Passion of Christ from the conclusion of the Last Supper until the Resurrection.

The Glorious Mysteries focus on the Gospel from the Resurrection into eternity.

I propose the Five Piscine (‘Fishy’) Mysteries:
  1. The calling of Peter, Andrew, James and John (‘come with me and I will make you fishers of men’)
  2. The Feeding of the Five Thousand (the most fish-tastic of all the mysteries)
  3. The Miraculous Catch of Fish (‘cast off for the deep waters’)
  4. St Peter’s Other Fishy Miracle (the lesser-known miracle where Jesus tells Peter to catch a fish, inside the mouth of which he found the necessary loot to pay taxes for Jesus and himself)
  5. Jesus’ Post-Resurrection Pigout (yeah, he just asks for some fish and eats it, but hey, it is highly significant and proves that He’s bodily risen and not just a ghost)
and now back to your regularly-scheduled programming … :tiphat:

In private devotion you can meditate on any mystery in the lives of Jesus and Mary while saying the Rosary.🙂

I agree. From time to time I like to meditate on other mysteries as well when I need fresh inspiration. For example female experiences with Jesus:
  1. several events of Mary’s life
  2. Jesus and the woman at the well
  3. Jesus heals the woman with the flow of blood
  4. Jesus saves the woman caught in adultery
  5. Jesus appears to women after his resurrection
In German speaking countries we also have the Comforting Mysteries that are in the official prayer and song books of the Church.

How about the five wrathful mystieries?

  1. *]Jesus turns over tables and makes a whip of cords in the Temple (Jn 2:15)
*]Jesus calls the Pharisees a “Brood of Vipers” (Mt 12:34; 23:33)
    *]Jesus calls people “Hypocrites” (Mt 15:7; 22:18; 23:13, 15, 23, 25, 27, 29; Mk 7:6; Lk 12:56; 13:15)
*]Jesus comes to cast fire on the earth and cause division (Lk 12:49-53)
*]Jesus calls Peter “Satan” (Mt 16:23)

    😉

    1. Cursing the Fig Tree.
    You’re gonna need another decade.
