A radio show on medicine had a segment on infant cricumsicion. The doctor/host is against it, even for religious reasons. He did said that many Christians do a circumcision in imitation of Christ.

Christians of all flavors , does Christ’s circumcision factor into your decision to have it done?

The doctor also noted that the Muslim population accounts for the most circumcisions in the world. I don’t know if that’s true. If you are Muslim, can you tell us if this is a religious practice or is it merely cultural?

Not a Muslim but yes its a religious obligation. Liberal Muslims claim to find a verse in the Quron or Hadith, I’ve forgotten which says it is not necessary.

Circumsion was more popular in America, then Europe in my opinion because there was less fear in America of being mistaken for a Jew and we don’t have Muslims on our borders. Today best medical evidence says its not necessary so American circumsion rates are dropping to match European rates.

It is the Islamic and Jewish worllds along with Pacific Islanders, most notably for this forum Catholic Philippines which have almost universal circumsion.

However in the Philippines circumsion arrived before Christiandom. Some say the Spanish and the Priest tried and failed to end the practice as it was an outward sign of Islam. It is such a strong cultural thing that medical missions are sent out to perform circumsions for the poor so 10 year old boys won’t try to remove their own foreskins.

It is not something I’ve discussed with my patents in many years, but I suspect they had it done to us (brothers and me) simply for hygiene. I think that’s typical for Americans of the baby boom.

Medical Ethics of Male Circumcision

A Group of Islamic Researchers :…It is well known that circumcision is an act pertaining to the fitrah (pure human nature). Some Muslim scholars consider it as a confirmed Sunnah. Other scholars consider it mandatory.

Circumcision: Juristic, Medical & Social Perspectives

Concerning male circumcision, Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Malik maintain that it is considered a confirmed sunnah, whereas Imam Shafi`i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal see that it is mandatory (wajib).

This means that male circumcision is an important ritual in Islam. Consequently, if a whole community of Muslims agreed to give up this ritual, the ruler of the Muslims would have to fight them for this, the same as if a community collectively abandoned calling to Prayer (Adhan).

From the medical point of view, circumcision has many benefits for man’s health and personal hygiene.
